We describe a new approach to making luminophores that display long emission wavelengths, long decay times, and high quantum yields. These luminophores are covalently linked pairs with a long-lifetime resonance-energy-transfer donor and a long-wavelength acceptor. The donor was a ruthenium (Ru) metal-ligand complex. The acceptor was the Texas Red. The donor and acceptor were covalently linked b...

Green fluorescent protein (GFP) and GFP-like fluorescent proteins owe their photophysical properties to an autocatalytically formed intrinsic chromophore. According to quantum mechanical calculations, the excited state of chromophore model systems has significant dihedral freedom, which may lead to fluorescence quenching intersystem crossing. Molecular dynamics simulations with freely rotating ...

In the present work we have explored the ultrafast relaxation network of coumarin and umbelliferone (7-hydroxy-coumarin) using time-resolved femtosecond spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations. Despite the importance of the photophysical properties of coumarin derivatives for applications in biomedicine, the low fluorescence quantum yield of coumarin itself has not been fully understood ...

The quantum yield of photoisomerisation of the photoactive yellow protein (PYP) strongly depends on peak power and wavelength with femtosecond optical excitation. Using systematic power titrations and addition of second order dispersion resulting in 140, 300 and 600 fs pulse durations, the one and multi-photon cross-sections at 400, 450 and 490 nm have been assessed from transient absorption sp...

We review realistic models that reproduce quantum theory in some limit and yield potentially new physics outside that limit. In particular, we consider deterministic hidden-variables theories (such as the pilot-wave model) and their extension to “quantum nonequilibrium,” and we consider the continuous spontaneous localization model of wave function collapse. Other models are briefly discussed.

Strongly fluorescent graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have been prepared by one-step solvothermal method with PL quantum yield as high as 11.4%. The GQDs have high stability and can be dissolved in most polar solvents. Because of fine biocompatibility and low toxicity, GQDs are demonstrated to be excellent bioimaging agents.

C-dots (3-5 nm in diameter) obtained by most simple heating of polyols (glycerol, diethylene glycol and PEG 400) show intense blue and green emission (50% quantum yield). Upon modification with TbCl3/EuCl3, energy transfer from the C-dots to the rare-earth metal results in line-type Tb(3+) (green)/Eu(3+) (red) emission with quantum yields up to 85%.

Peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) vapor was photolyzedat 248 nmandthe N03 photoproduct wasdetected bylaser induced fluorescence. Thequantum yield fortheproduction of N03 was determined by comparison to N 205 photolysis data taken under identical experimental conditions. Contributions to the observed laser induced fluorescence were found to arise from excited state photoproducts such as N02* . The exci...

The ensemble PL quantum yield for raw single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) dispersed in sodium cholate (SC) is approximately 5 times greater than that for the same raw SWNTs dispersed in sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and approximately 10 times greater than the quantum yield of purified SWNTs dispersed in SC. Absorbance and Raman spectra indicate that purified SC-dispersed SWNTs and raw SDS-dis...

We report the characterization and photochemistry of a simple ruthenium coordination complex containing only picolinate (pic) and dmso, which exhibits a large isomerization quantum yield (Phi(SS-->OO) = 0.50) in various solvents. The picolinate ligands of [Ru(pic)(2)(dmso)(2)] are in a cis arrangement so that the carboxylate oxygen of one pic ligand (O1) is trans to the pyridine of the second p...
