The diagnosis of pseudotumor cerebri, or idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH), is most confidently established in the typical patient with evidence of papilledema, imaging that does not suggest a structural lesion, and a CSF examination that shows both normal composition and elevated intracranial pressure (ICP). Prompted by an increasing number of reports over the past decade, Friedman et...

Pseudotumor cerebri (PTC) is characterized by increased intracranial pressure and papilledema without a mass lesion. PTC predominantly affects obese women. Currently, the pathogenesis of PTC is obscure. Since cytoskeletal abnormalities are found in many neurodegenerative diseases, we hypothesized that some cytoskeletal protein might be involved in the pathophysiology of PTC. Western blotting wi...

Benign intracranial hypertension is a condition of obscure aetiology which presents with episodic headaches and nausea. INTRODUCTION Pulmonary Surfactant reduces surface tension in the terminal airways thus facilitating breathing and contributes to host's innate immunity. Surfactant Proteins (SP) A, B, C and D were recently identified as inherent proteins of the CNS. Aim of the study was to investigate cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) SP levels in hydrocephalus patients compared to normal subjects. PATIENTS AND METHO...

Headache is a frequent symptom in sickle cell disease (SCD) that usually is attributable to anemia or cerebrovascular disease. We report 3 pediatric patients with SCD (1 patient with SCD-SC and 2 patients with SCD-SS) who presented with headache and were diagnosed with pseudotumor cerebri (PC). All 3 patients had elevated opening pressures during a lumbar puncture with normal cerebrospinal flui...
