Allescheria boydii was repeatedly isolated from thoracentesis fluid from a patient with a right pleural effusion. Histological study of methanamine-stained pleural tissue revealed the presence of septate hyphae. After a thoracotomy and decortication, the patient's symptoms cleared, and he has remained asymptomatic over a postoperative period of 13 months.
BACKGROUND Some members of the Pseudallescheria (anamorph Scedosporium) have emerged as an important cause of life-threatening infections in humans. These fungi may reach the lungs and bronchial tree causing a wide range of manifestations, from colonization of airways to deep pulmonary infections. Frequently, they may also disseminate to other organs, with a predilection for the brain. In other...
INTRODUCTION Although fungal rhinosinusitis is a rare disorder but number of cases on record has increased manifold during the last decades worldwide There are two basic types of fungal rhinosinusitisinvasive and non-invasive. The invasive form may be of acute invasive and chronic invasive. The non-invasive fungal rhinosinusitis can be of three typesfungus balls or mycetomas, saprophytic coloni...
The application of PCR technology to molecular diagnostics holds great promise for the early identification of medically important pathogens. PCR has been shown to be useful for the detection of the presence of fungal DNA in both laboratory and clinical samples. Considerable interest has been focused on the utility of selecting universal primers, those that recognize constant regions among most...
To detect genetic defects that might have caused loss of flagella in Shigella boydii and Shigella sonnei, the region III flagellar (fli) operons were cloned from certain strains and analyzed with reference to the restriction maps and genetic maps of Escherichia coli fli operons. S. boydii NCTC9733 (strain C5 in this paper) had the 988-bp internal deletion in the fliF gene that encodes a large s...
BACKGROUND Shigellosis continues to be a public health challenge for developing countries, including Bangladesh. The aim of the study is to demonstrate recent changes in Shigella sero-groups and their geographical diversity. METHODS Data were extracted from data archive of four diarrheal disease surveillance systems. A 2% sub sample from urban Dhaka Hospital (2008-2011; n = 10,650), and 10% f...
A novel colicin, designated colicin U, was found in two Shigella boydii strains of serovars 1 and 8. Colicin U was active against bacterial strains of the genera Escherichia and Shigella. Plasmid pColU (7.3 kb) of the colicinogenic strain S. boydii M592 (serovar 8) was sequenced, and three colicin genes were identified. The colicin U activity gene, cua, encodes a protein of 619 amino acids (Mr,...
