This paper considers how power-based distribution tariffs encourage electricity end-users to invest in energy storages to reduce their peak loads. The study uses actual automatic meter reading (AMR) data from 30 000 customers the annual electricity consumption of which is less than 50 MWh. The customers locate in the area of a Finnish distribution system operator (DSO) operating in an urban env...

Non-local effects have been traditionally identified as one of the most limiting factors of the performance of Brillouin optical time-domain analyzers. These phenomena, directly linked with the energy gained/lost by the pump pulse, limit the probe power and ultimately the SNR of the system. Several solutions have been proposed, although none offers the possibility to increase the probe power un...

In this article, we present a system-level characterization of the energy consumption for sensor network application scenarios. We compute a power efficiency metric—average watt-per-meter—for each radio transmission and extend this local metric to find the global energy consumption. This analysis shows how overall energy consumption varies with transceiver characteristics, node density, data tr...

A new method for calculating the stress field in bounded ice shelves is used to compare strain rate and deviatoric stress on the Ross Ice Shelf, Antarctica. The analysis shows that strain rate (per second) increases as the third power of deviatoric stress (in newtons per square meter), with a constant of proportionality equal to 2.3 x 10(-25).

A discussion is given of a technique to simulate the quantum mechanical motion of electrons in nano-scale devices. The results of the simulation are used to produce digital video’s, facilitating the interpretation of the quantum mechanical phenomena. The power and flexibility of the simulation method is illustrated by some examples of electron emission from nano-meter scale sources.

Existing electricity market segmentation analysis techniques only make use of limited consumption statistics (usually averages and variances). In this paper we use power demand distributions (PDDs) obtained from fine-grain smart meter data to perform market segmentation based on distributional clustering. We apply this approach to mining 8 months of readings from about 1000 US Google employees.

Electricity is one of the fundamental necessities of the human being which is commonly used for industrial, domestic and agricultural purposes, therefore problem arises when we distribute this electricity and cannot work beyond the meter readings. With the advent of time technology has provided tremendous advancements on its consumption, generation and distribution, one such area for its improv...

Individual meter-in and meter-out proportional control of hydraulic cylinders allow more flexible strategies how to handle a payload while optimising certain aspects of the motion. An optimal control approach based on the Hamiltonian is used to plan a motion path for a separate meter-in and separate meter-out system. One goal is to avoid oscillations at the end of the motion in the sense of act...

Smart Grids measure energy usage in real-time and tailor supply and delivery accordingly, in order to improve power transmission and distribution. For the grids to operate effectively, it is critical to collect readings from massivelyinstalled smart meters to control centers in an efficient and secure manner. In this paper, we propose a secure compressed reading scheme to address this critical ...
