Portal vein thrombosis is a pathological process that refers to the obstruction of blood flow secondary thrombus formation. It may be caused by variety conditions including cancer, cirrhosis, myeloproliferative neoplasms (eg. polycythemia vera) or surgery in area portal splenectomy). Recent studies suggest patients with positive history SARS-CoV-2 infection have higher risk thromboembolic incid...

BACKGROUND Current treatment recommendations for patients with polycythemia vera call for maintaining a hematocrit of less than 45%, but this therapeutic strategy has not been tested in a randomized clinical trial. METHODS We randomly assigned 365 adults with JAK2-positive polycythemia vera who were being treated with phlebotomy, hydroxyurea, or both to receive either more intensive treatment...

(RECEIVED FOR PUBLICATION NOVEMBER 16, 1950) The following observations are concerned with the survival of erythrocytes from three polycythaemic patients transfused into normal recipients and estimated by the method of differential agglutination. The donors were (1) a man aged 60, known to be suffering from polycythaemia vera for seven years. A typical blood count at one time in July, 1949, gav...

Recent studies have demonstrated neutrophil overexpression of the polycythemia rubra vera-1 (PRV-1) gene in polycythemia vera (PV) but not in secondary or spurious polycythemia (SP). To validate as well as expand upon this novel observation, we conducted a prospective study of 88 subjects: 30 with PV, 22 with SP, 14 with essential thrombocythemia (ET), 12 with myelofibrosis with myeloid metapla...

The clinical and laboratory characteristics that are essential for the differential diagnosis of the polycythemic states are reviewed. The various forms of polycythemia that present as increases in hemoglobin concentration or packed red cell volumes can often be distinguished on the basis of pathophysiology, predisposition to neoplasia, hematological and viral parameters, chromosomal patterns, ...

A comprehensive database inquiry at our institutions identified 11 patients with echocardiogram-documented idiopathic cardiomyopathy that post-dated a diagnosis of either polycythemia vera or essential thrombocythemia. Anagrelide therapy was temporally associated with the particular complication in 6 patients, all of whom experienced symptomatic and/or objective improvement after drug discontin...

We evaluated factor IX activation peptide and soluble adhesion molecules of the selectin class (endothelial, leukocyte and platelet) in a group of patients affected by chronic myeloproliferative disorders (essential thrombocythemia and polycythemia vera) with high platelet counts in a stable condition. Using these markers, we could not demonstrate evidence of hypercoagulability or endothelial d...

The predictive values of common biological criteria for the diagnosis of polycythemia vera were studied in a cohort of patients with high hematocrit. We found JAK2V617F and erythropoietin assays were the most relevant first tests. Classification of patients according to their JAK2V617F status and erythropoietin levels facilitated the choice of further diagnostic investigations.
