Ecological systems evolve in space and time. Until recently, however, research in ecology separately has focused either on the spatial domain (patterns) or on the temporal domain (processes). In this paper we describe novel approaches for progressing towards an integration of pattern and process, a goal long called for in ecology. First, we present a sequence of alternative stochastic models of...

We present an analytically tractable variant of the voter model that provides a quantitatively accurate description of Beta diversity (two-point correlation function) in two tropical forests. The model exhibits novel scaling behavior that leads to links between ecological measures such as relative species abundance and the species-area relationship.

Soils are extremely rich in biodiversity, and soil organisms play pivotal roles in supporting terrestrial life, but the role that individual plants and plant communities play in influencing the diversity and functioning of soil food webs remains highly debated. Plants, as primary producers and providers of resources to the soil food web, are of vital importance for the composition, structure, a...

The diversity of microbes associated with plant roots is enormous, in the order of tens of thousands of species. This complex plant-associated microbial community, also referred to as the second genome of the plant, is crucial for plant health. Recent advances in plant-microbe interactions research revealed that plants are able to shape their rhizosphere microbiome, as evidenced by the fact tha...

This paper introduces a functional-structural plant model based on Artificial Life concepts and reports studies on evolutionary dynamics in virtual plant communities. The characteristic of the present approach lies in plant evolution at both functional and structural levels. The conducted experiments focus on the emergence of different life history strategies in an environment with heterogeneou...

A growing body of evidence obtained largely from temperate grassland studies suggests that feedbacks occurring between plants and their associated soil biota are important to plant community assemblage. However, few studies have examined the importance of soil organisms in driving plant-soil feedbacks in forested systems. In a tropical forest in central Panama, we examined whether interactions ...

In this study, we used data from temperate grassland plant communities in Alberta, Canada to test two longstanding hypotheses in ecology: 1) that there has been correlated evolution of the leaves and roots of plants due to selection for an integrated whole-plant resource uptake strategy, and 2) that trait diversity in ecological communities is generated by adaptations to the conditions in diffe...

1. Genetic variation within and among foundation plant species is known to affect arthropod, plant and soil microbial communities. We hypothesized that the same would be expected for pathogen communities, which have typically been studied only as individual pathogen species. 2. In a common garden in Utah, USA, we first tested how genetic differences within and among Populus angustifolia, P. fre...

Ecosystems worldwide are receiving increasing amounts of reactive nitrogen (N) through anthropogenic activities. Although the effects of increased N inputs on plant communities have been reasonably well studied, few comparable studies have examined impacts on whole soil bacterial communities, though they play critical roles in ecosystem functioning. We sampled soils from two long-term ecologica...
