The Brownian motion of a particle in a harmonic potential, which is simultaneously exposed either to a linear shear flow or to a plane Poiseuille flow is investigated. In the shear plane of both flows the probability distribution of the particle becomes anisotropic and the dynamics is changed in a characteristic manner compared to a trapped particle in a quiescent fluid. The particle distributi...
Given a set of N such shape samples {s, . . . , s}, a parametric statistical subspace of the object’s shape variance can be retrieved by first applying Generalised Procrustes Analysis on the shapes to normalise them with respect to the global similarity transform (i.e., scale, in-plane rotation and translation) and then using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The returned shape subspace is fu...
To assess facial form, one has to determine the size, position, orientation, shape, and symmetry of the different facial units. Many of these assessments require a frame of reference. The customary coordinate system used for these assessments is the 'standard anatomical frame of reference', a three-dimensional Cartesian system made by three planes: the sagittal, the axial, and the coronal. Cons...
Experimental demonstration of in-plane negative-angle refraction with an array of silicon nanoposts.
Controlling an optical beam is fundamental in optics. Recently, unique manipulation of optical wavefronts has been successfully demonstrated by metasurfaces. However, these artificially engineered nanostructures have thus far been limited to operate on light beams propagating out-of-plane. The in-plane operation is critical for on-chip photonic applications. Here, we demonstrate an anomalous ne...
The study of polycrystals of shape-memory alloys and rigid-perfectly plastic materials gives rise to problems of nonlinear homogenization involving degenerate energies. This paper presents a characterization of the stress and strain fields in a class of problems in plane strain, and uses it to study examples including checkerboards and hexagonal microstructures. Consequences for shape-memory al...
It is proved that the shape of the typical cell of a Poisson–Delaunay tessellation of R tends to the shape of a regular simplex, given that the surface area, or the inradius, or the minimal width, of the typical cell tends to infinity. Typical cells of large diameter tend to belong to a special class of simplices, distinct from the regular ones. In the plane, these are the rightangled triangles.
