The integration of Atomic Force Microscopy and Raman spectroscopy is tested for use in heterogeneous catalysis research by a preliminary investigation, the photo-oxidation of rhodamine-6G. Temperature and atmosphere were varied in an in situ cell to show compatibility with realistic reaction conditions.

We used STM to observe visible light photo-oxidation reactions of formic acid on the ordered lattice-work structure of a TiO(2)(001) surface for the first time. The nanostructured surface makes the band gap significantly smaller than 3.0 eV only at the surface layer, and the surface state of the crystal enables a visible light response.

Aligned CuO nanowires (NWs) were synthesized by a simple cost-effective oxidation method. They act as cores; high density CuO/ZnO core/shell heterostructure NWs were fabricated by thermal decomposition. Using the core/shell heterostructure NWs as a photoelectrode, a 0.71% photo-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency was obtained from photoelectrochemical water decomposition.
