We investigated the transcriptional responses of Pseudomonas aeruginosa under phosphate-deficient (0.2 mM) conditions compared to phosphate sufficiency (1 mM). This elicited enormous transcriptional changes in genes related to phosphate acquisition, quorum sensing, chemotaxis, toxin secretion, and regulation. This dysregulation also led to increased virulence-associated phenotypes, including sw...

Although microRNAs (miRNAs) have been documented to regulate development in plants and animals , the function of miRNAs in physiology is unclear. miR399 has multiple target sites in the 5' untranslated region (UTR) of a gene encoding a putative ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme (UBC) in Arabidopsis thaliana. We report here that miR399 was highly induced, whereas the target UBC mRNA was reduced by lo...

Pro accumulation in plants is a well-documented physiological response to osmotic stress caused by drought or salinity. In Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana), the stress and ABA-induced Δ1-PYRROLINE-5-CARBOXYLATE SYNTHETASE1 (P5CS1) gene was previously shown to control Pro biosynthesis in such adverse conditions. To identify regulatory factors that control the transcription of P5CS1, Y1H screen...

A recombinant plasmid carrying a bovine growth hormone gene fused with the regulatory and signal regions of the alkaline phosphatase gene of E. coli was constructed. The bovine growth hormone gene expression as well as protein partial processing and secretion into the periplasm have been shown to take place under phosphate starvation, i.e. conditions of alkaline phosphatase derepression.

1. Rates of insulin secretion, glucose utilization, lactate output, incorporation of glucose into glycogen, contents of glucose 6-phosphate, fructose 1,6-diphosphate and ATP, and maximally extractable enzyme activities of hexokinase, high-K(m) glucose-phosphorylating activity (;glucokinase'), glucose 6-phosphatase and unspecific acid phosphatase were measured in isolated pancreatic islets from ...

In addition to the Pho regulon, phosphate starvation also stimulates the accumulation of RpoS. Several deletion mutations within the pstSCAB-phoU operon were tested for the accumulation of RpoS during exponential growth. Our data suggest that the processed 3' end of the pstA message stimulates translation of rpoS.

Plants assemble beneficial root-associated microbiomes to support growth, especially in nutrient-poor conditions. To do so, however, plants have to suppress their immune system. Reporting in Nature, Castrillo et al. (2017) identified PHOSPHATE STARVATION RESPONSE1 (PHR1) as a central regulator in this balance between nutrient stress response and immune regulation.

The activities of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH, EC 1.1.1.49) and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6PGDH, EC 1.1.1.44) were found to increase in suspension-cultured Arabidopsis thaliana cells after 10-day-old stationary phase cells were transferred to fresh Murashige-Skoog medium. The activities of these enzymes peaked early in the exponential growth stage of the culture (day 4) and...
