1,3-Alternate calix[4]arene with para-phenylene spacers connecting nitroxide monoradicals and high-spin (S = 1) diradicals provides tetraradical and octaradical scaffolds that possess conformations with slow electron spin relaxation rates (1/T(1)). Such scaffolds may facilitate tuning of relaxation rates that are more favorable for MRI or DNP applications.

Based on the complexation between bis(m-phenylene)-32-crown-10-based cryptands and a paraquat derivative, two [2]rotaxanes were synthesized by using a threading-followed-by-stoppering method. Due to the strong associations between the cryptands and the paraquat derivative, high yields were achieved even in dilute solution.

Activation of bis-o-phenylene tetrasulfide to render it a practical benzodithiete equivalent for [4+2] cycloadditions with alkenes has been achieved with catalytic amounts of Mo(tfd)(2)(bdt) (tfd = S(2)C(2)(CF(3))(2); bdt = S(2)C(6)H(4)). Substituted 2,3-dihydro-1,4-benzodithiins are produced.

In the crystal structure, the mol-ecule of the title compound, C(14)H(16)N(2)O(6), is located on an inversion centre. The amide -NHCO- plane makes a dihedral angle of 34.08 (9)° with the benzene ring. The mol-ecules are connected via inter-molecular O-H⋯N hydrogen bonds into a two-dimensional network parallel to the bc plane. An intramolecular N-H⋯O hydrogen bond is also observed.

The presence of a second 1,3-diborata-2,4-diphosphoniocyclobutane-1,3-diyl in the para-position of a phenylene linker favors the diradical form over the 1,3-diborata-2,4-diphosphoniobicyclo[1.1.0]butane bond stretch isomer, as long as the two planar diradical units are coplanar with the linker. This demonstrates that two BPBP diradicals communicate through the phenyl ring.
