Nicotinic acid adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NAADP) is involved in the Ca2+ response observed at fertilization in several species, including starfish. In this study, we have employed Ca2+ imaging and the single-electrode voltage-clamp technique to investigate whether the NAADP-mediated Ca2+ entry discovered in our laboratory in starfish oocytes was underlain by a membrane current and whether ...

The consistent association of the sodiumand potassium-activated ATPase with the immunologically detectable component suggests either that all fragments of plasma membrane maintain their natural "inside-outside" orientation, or that this enzyme system is active only when the original orientation is maintained. The very fact that this ATPase is detectable at all implies that the vesicle walls are...

The role of membrane components, sterols, phospholipids and sphingolipids in the formation and functioning of ion-permeable nanopores formed by antifungal macrolide antibiotics, amphotericin B, nystatin and filipin in planar lipid bilayers was studied. Dipole modifiers, flavonoids and styryl dyes, were used as a tool to study the molecular mechanisms of polyene channel-forming activity. The int...

Highly permeable zeolite membranes are desirable for fast gas separation in the industry. Reducing membrane's thickness is deemed to be an optimal solution permeability improvement. Herein, we report synthesis route of thin SSZ-13 via conversion template-contained surface gels. The gel fully crystallized into crack-free assisted with dual templates N,N,N-trimethyl-1-adamantammonium hydroxide (T...

In vitro culture of primary hepatocytes for drug screening purposes remains a challenge as cells rapidly lose their function in conventional conditions. Thin oxygen permeable membranes have shown, through direct oxygenation, beneficial effects long-term and cellular with freshly isolated hepatocytes. However, cryopreserved hepatocytes, standard the industry, has shown limits due to high damage,...

Vesicles were made from amphiphilic diblock copolymers and characterized by micromanipulation. The average molecular weight of the specific polymer studied, polyethyleneoxide-polyethylethylene (EO40-EE37), is several times greater than that of typical phospholipids in natural membranes. Both the membrane bending and area expansion moduli of electroformed polymersomes (polymer-based liposomes) f...

Membrane introduction mass spectrometry (MIMS) is a direct technique used to monitor online chemical systems or quickly quantify trace levels of different groups compounds in complex matrices without extensive sample preparation steps and chromatographic separation. MIMS utilizes thin, semi-permeable, selective membrane that directly connects the spectrometer. The analytes are pre-concentrated ...

We consider subdiffusion of a particle in one-dimensional system with thin partially permeable wall. Passing through the wall, can be absorbed certain probability. call such wall absorbing (PPAW). Using diffusion model discrete time and spatial variable, probability densities (Green's functions) describing have been derived. Knowing Green's functions we derive boundary conditions at The take sp...

A novel microfluidic fabrication technique which allows in situ formed silicon microchannels and does not necessitate substrate bonding is presented. A gas-permeable polymer membrane acts as the top surface of the microchannel, allowing xenon difluoride (XeF2) etchant to pass unobstructed to the silicon substrate. Exposed silicon areas on the wafer are then etched isotropically.

Cyclic peptides are capable of binding and modulating challenging drug targets including protein-protein interactions. However, their lack of membrane permeability prevents their application against intracellular targets. In this study, we show that it is possible to design a cell-permeable and biologically active cycloheptapeptide inhibitor against the intracellular enzyme peptidyl-prolyl isom...
