We report a case of acute Plasmodium malariae infection complicating corticosteroid treatment for membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis in a patient from an area where P. malariae infection is not endemic. A peripheral blood smear showed typical band-form trophozoites compatible with P. malariae or Plasmodium knowlesi. SSU rRNA sequencing confirmed the identity to be P. malariae.

Material and Methods: HbA1C levels of 120 non-diabetic hypothyroid patients (30 microcytic hypochromic anaemia, 30 normocytic normochromic anaemia and 60 non anemic patients) with 120 age, sex, plasma glucose levels and anaemia status matched controls were assessed. Anaemia status was determined by ferritin, Haemoglobin, red cell indices and peripheral smear. Glycemic status was determined by f...

The cell in Image BCI-01 is a nucleated red blood cell (RBC). Although nucleated RBCs do not normally appear in the peripheral blood of an adult, it is not unexpected in this patient’s condition owing to hematopoietic bone marrow stress. Nucleated RBCs are immature erythrocytes that still retain their nucleus. The cell in this image is typical of those most often seen in the peripheral blood of...

The field of neural networks has seen significant advances in recent years with the development deep and convolutional networks. Although many current works address real-valued models, studies reveal that hypercomplex-valued parameters can better capture, generalize, represent complexity multidimensional data. This paper explores quaternion-valued network application for a pattern recognition t...
