BACKGROUND Reconstruction of large bone defects is a great challenge in orthopedic research. In the present study, we prepared composites of bone marrow-derived stromal cells (BMSCs) and β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) with three novel aspects: proliferation of BMSCs with continuous dexamethasone treatment, cell loading under low pressure, and use of autologous plasma as the cell loading medium....

INTRODUCTION The lateral tarsal strip procedure (LTS) was first reported by Anderson and Gordy in 1979 for the management of paralytic or senile eyelid laxity. Since its description, the LTS procedure has been subject to several modifications by various authors. In this study, we described the Looi suture technique, a small modification in the technique of suturing the LTS to the lateral orbita...

DESCRIPTION A 61 year-old man was referred for management of a distal dorsal squamous cell carcinoma of the thumb with involved distal phalangeal periosteum. The dorsal cortex of the distal phalanx and all nail-producing and hyponychial tissues were excised and sent for pathology. No tumor was found; thus, the remaining volar distal phalanx was conserved.

Extensive Mohs surgery for carcinomas of the forehead and scalp occasionally requires the removal of periosteum. The exposed bone presents a wound management problem. One method, if healing by secondary intention is a viable option, is to chisel bone to stimulate granulation tissue and promote healing. A case is presented that describes this procedure in an elderly patient.

Radicular cysts are the most common cystic lesions affecting the jaws. They are most commonly found at the apices of the involved teeth. This condition is usually asymptomatic but can result in a slow-growth tumefaction in the affected region. The following case report presents the successful treatment of radicular cysts using autologous periosteum and platelet-rich fibrin with demineralized fr...

BACKGROUND The application of bone tissue engineering for repairing bone defects has gradually shown some satisfactory progress. One of the concerns raising scientific attention is the poor supply of growth factors. A number of growth factor delivery approaches have been developed for promoting bone formation. However, there is no systematic comparison of those approaches on efficiency of neobo...

Free-standing (FS) membranes have increasing applications in the biomedical field as drug delivery systems for wound healing and tissue engineering. Here, we studied the potential of free-standing membranes made by the layer-by-layer assembly of chitosan and alginate to be used as a simple biomimetic system of the periosteum. The design of a periosteum-like membrane implies the elaboration of a...

The goal of our research work is to establish mesenchymal osteoprogenitors derived from human jaw periosteum for tissue engineering applications in oral and maxillofacial surgery. For future autologous and/or allogeneic transplantations, some issues must be addressed. On the one hand, animal-free culture conditions have yet to be established. On the other hand, attempts should be undertaken to ...

BACKGROUND Tendon-bone tunnel healing is crucial for long term success in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. The periosteum contains osteochondral progenitor cells that can differentiate into osteoblasts and chondroblasts during tendon-bone healing. We developed a scaffold-free method using polymerized fibrin-coated dishes to make functional periosteal progenitor cell (PPC) sheets...

BACKGROUND Spiral fractures of the tibia are virtually homogeneous with regard to their pathomorphism. The differences that are seen concern the level of fracture of the fibula, and, to a lesser extent, the level of fracture of the tibia, the length of fracture cleft, and limb shortening following the trauma. While conventional radiographs provide sufficient information about the pathomorphism ...
