We report a case of disseminated human papillomavirus infection that developed in a patient while receiving efalizumab for the treatment of psoriasis. This infection progressed for several months after efalizumab treatment had been stopped. All human papillomavirus lesions completely resolved after 10 weeks of therapy with a combination of pegylated interferon and ribavirin.
Our own experience and a thorough literature review suggest that interferon α (IFNα) should be reconsidered for the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia patients. Most likely, the success of such treatment depends on the achievement of high serum levels of IFNα for several months, which can be obtained by using pegylated IFNα.
Forty-eight hepatitis B virus (HBV) E antigen-negative chronic hepatitis B patients received pegylated interferon alfa-2b either alone or with lamivudine for 48 weeks and were followed for an additional 24 weeks. At the end of follow-up, virological response rates (HBV DNA levels of <400 copies/ml) were similar in the monotherapy (24%) and combination therapy (26%) groups.
The standard of care for treatment of individuals chronically infected with hepatitis C virus is pegylated interferon in combination with ribavirin. Efficacy is closely related to viral genotype. This review outlines potential therapeutic strategies for treatment failures and discusses some of the newer agents currently in development.
Interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) is a nonleukemogenic treatment of polycythemia vera (PV) able to induce cytogenetic remissions. Its use is limited by toxicity, leading to treatment discontinuation in approximately 20% of patients. We completed a phase 2 multicenter study of pegylated IFN-alpha-2a in 40 PV patients. Objectives included evaluation of efficacy, safety, and monitoring of residual dise...
OBJECTIVE Infection with hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a serious public health problem worldwide. In clinical studies, weight loss has been reported in 11% to 29% of patients treated with pegylated interferon-α-2a/2b. Few reports have tried to explain such a weight loss. The aim of this study was to evaluate nutritional status, body composition, and resting energy expenditure (REE) in patients wit...
