Hyperparathyroidism occurs in 20-30% of MEN2A syndrome patients. It is usually associated with mild disease and is frequently asymptomatic, especially in younger age. There is genotype/phenotype association and PHP is usually associated with codon 634 mutations; however association with more "rare" mutations has also been reported. The pathology of the parathyroid glands includes hyperplasia, a...

Spontaneous or fine-needle aspiration (FNAB)-induced remission of primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) may occur, especially for cystic lesions. However, the disease generally relapses over a short time period. We present a case of PHPT due to an enlarged hyperfunctioning parathyroid that underwent long-term (almost 9 years) clinical and ultrasonographic remission after the disappearance of the l...
A 68-year-old woman with a history of parathyroidectomy of the left upper and right lower parathyroid gland for parathyroid carcinoma was admitted to our hospital for evaluation of fatigue and anorexia that lasted for 1 month. Blood chemistry was notable for hypercalcemia (14.1 mg/dL) and elevated parathyroid hormone (PTH) 1,652 pg/mL (0.35 to 5.50). Serum PTH-related peptide (PTHrP) level was ...
Solitary parathyroid adenomas were correctly located before surgery in 20 out of 21 cases by using 20lmTl and 99mTc in a subtraction technique. The technique was not useful in identifying hyperplastic parathyroid glands. The technique is recommended as a useful procedure before surgery for primary hyperparathyroidism.
