We investigate a new scheme for driving reflective bistable cholesteric displays. It relies on fast switching from the planar to the focal conic state. We show that 1 ms per line scanning speed is possible using conventional passive matrix drivers. In addition, there is no optical delay in the switching process.
We present an all-optical delay-line radio-frequency (RF) notch filter. The filter exploits cross-gain modulation in a homogeneously broadened laser medium to obtain a negative tap in an optically incoherent system. Applications including moving-target indication (MTI) in optically controlled radars are discussed.
Among the promising new developments towards cost-effective long-haul transmission are chirped multi-channel Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG). In this paper we discuss the feasibility of long-haul WDM optical transmission using only FBGs for in-line dispersion compensation. We show successful transmission of 32x10.7-Gbit/s NRZ modulated channels over 3,800-km using low group delay ripple slope-matche...
In this paper, an optimal approach to design wideband tapped-delay line (TDL) array antenna is proposed. This approach lets us control the array angular and frequency response over a wide frequency band. To this end, some design restrictions are defined and a multi-objective optimization problem is constructed by putting the individual restrictions together. The optimal weights of the TDL proce...
We experimentally studied the performance of a delay-line interferometer-based optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) monitor that is pre-calibrated in optimal conditions for 25-Gbaud pol-muxed quadrature-amplitude-modulation (QAM) signals, when unpredicted changes outside the monitor occurred either in the transmitter or the link.
We show that a frequency-resolved optical gating device using (1) a thick nonlinear crystal to replace the usual thin crystal and spectrometer and (2) a Fresnel biprism to replace the beam splitter and delay line yields a remarkably simple single-shot ultrashort-pulse intensity-and-phase measurement device with no sensitive alignment parameters and significantly greater sensitivity.
uniform linear array (ula)-based tapped-delay line (tdl) structure has good performance metrics when the signal sources are located at the middle angles. it offers poor performance when the signal sources are close to the array endfire. in this paper, a new approach is proposed which offers higher performance and desired beamforming on tdl structure when the wideband uncorrelated radio sources ...
The scanning delay line is a key component of time-domain optical coherence tomography systems. It has evolved since its inception toward higher scan rates and simpler implementation. However, existing approaches still suffer from drawbacks in terms of size, cost, and complexity, and they are not suitable for implementation using integrated optics. In this Letter, we report a rapid scanning del...
A compact and low-cost continuous wave terahertz spectrometer operating at an optical wavelength of 1.5 μm is presented. The spectrometer employs high power distributed feedback (DFB) laser diodes in integrated “butterfly” packages. No further optical amplification of the beating signal is required. An integrated photodiode antenna with an output power of 5 μW at 500 GHz is used as efficient te...
Abstrucf-A new all-fiber interferometric method for chromatic dispersion measurements in meter-length single-mode fibers is presented. In a Michelson setup a reference fiber is used whose physical length is varied so as to obtain an adjustable optical delay. Time resolution, ease of manipulation, and mechanical isolation are considerably improved with respect to conventional interferometers. Re...
