This paper is a brief comparison between the Interactions of UML 2.0 as defined by the Final Adopted Specification (OMG ptc/03-07-06) and MSC-2000 as defined by Z.120 (ITU 1999). The comparison investigates whether UML 2.0 has serious shortcomings relative to MSC-2000. The paper also discusses whether MSC-2000 is still needed in the future or should be retired.

The OMG has issued a Request for Proposal for a workflow management facility for the Object Management Architecture Reference Model. The two responses are complex object-oriented designs. Unfortunately, they both ignore recent work in object-oriented design patterns. Using these patterns will correct some of the deficiencies in the proposals.

We present a mathematical theory of class. The theory is general, in that it encompasses many different approaches to type abstraction, such as type constructors, generic parameters, classes, inheritance and polymorphism. The theory is elegant, in that it is based on a simple generalisation of F-bounds. The theory has timely implications for emerging OMG standards and future language designs.

This paper deals with the definition of a UML profile addressing software for critical applications. This profile is implemented in the context of the HIDOORS project. It is based on both OMG standard profile "UML Profile for Schedulability, Performance and Time" and the ARINC 653 specification.
