Using the history dependence of a dipolar glass hosted in a compositionally disordered lithium-enriched potassium tantalate niobate (KTN:Li) crystal, we demonstrate scale-free optical propagation at tunable temperatures. The operating equilibration temperature is determined by previous crystal spiralling in the temperature/cooling-rate phase space.

The results of detailed experimental and theoretical considerations relating to multiple hologram recording in lithium niobate is reported. The following problem areas are identified and discussed: 1) the angular selectivity of the stored holograms, 2) interference effects due to the crystal surfaces, 3) beam divergence effects, 4) material recording sensitivity, and 5) scattered light from mat...

We present a device to facilitate single-photon detection at communication wavelengths based on continuous-wave sum-frequency generation with an upconversion efficiency exceeding 90%. Sum-frequency generation in a periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide is used to upconvert signal photons to the near infrared, where detection can be performed efficiently by use of silicon avalanche photodi...

We investigate the transverse second-harmonic generation in as grown strontium barium niobate (SBN) crystals with a random structure of anti-parallel ferroelectric domains. We consider both, single and counterpropagating pulse geometries. We investigate polarization properties of the second harmonic signal and discuss applications of this process for short pulses characterization. PACS (2008): ...

We demonstrate experimentally the formation of polychromatic single- and double-charge optical vortex solitons by employing a lithium niobate crystal as a nonlinear medium with defocusing nonlinearity. We study the wavelength dependence of the vortex core localization and observe self-trapping of polychromatic vortices with a bandwidth spanning over more than 70 nm for single-charge and 180 nm ...

We demonstrate a new method of electrical fixing of waveguiding channels in strontium-barium niobate. The method is applicable to both bulk material and planar SBN waveguides. Waveguiding is achieved for extraordinarily polarized light. We suggest that the fixing is based on a partial depoling of the crystal rather than on internal electric fields.

We propose an ultrafast pulse shaping method by modulating the pulse phase and amplitude by the electro-optic effect and Bragg diffraction in the aperiodically optical superlattice. Linear-chirped periodically poled lithium niobate is used. The input pulse can be shaped, for example, by compressing it through the extraordinary refractive index change of the crystal by applying and changing the ...

We report 99% pump depletion in single-pass second-harmonic generation. Quasi-cw pulses at 1550 nm were frequency doubled in an annealed proton-exchanged waveguide formed in periodically poled lithium niobate. Measurements of pump depletion and second-harmonic generation agree with results from numerical integration of the coupled-mode equations that describe the process.

We report the experimental demonstration of spatial nonlinear beam displacement caused by an interface between periodically modulated and uniform quadratic nonlinearity. We observe intensity- and phase-mismatch-dependent spatial beam displacement at 1548 nm in lithium niobate waveguides. The device has the potential to provide a soliton-emission-based, ultrafast all-optical switch.

Using optical phase conjugation with a polarization independent periodically-poled lithium-niobate subsystem, we demonstrate dense WDM 2x10Gbit/s RZ-DQPSK transmission over 10,200km of SSMF with a record accumulated dispersion, exceeding 80,000ps/nm. 2005 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (060.2330) Fiber optics communications; (070.5040) Phase conjugation
