An Arthrobacter strain mineralized naphthalene and n-hexadecane dissolved in 2,2,4,4,6,8,8-heptamethylnonane. The extent of mineralization increased with greater volumes of solvent. Measurements under aseptic conditions of the partitioning of naphthalene into the aqueous phase from the solid phase or from heptamethylnonane showed that the rates were rapid and did not limit mineralization. The r...
generally, fruit trees should produce sufficient yield annually through their economic life. fruit trees usually produce flowers over their ability of productivity. if all of the flowers are converted to fruit, the tree will be weak and poor smaller fruit will be produced and it may cause alternate bearing. thus some flowers must be removed by hand, mechanically or chemically. in this study, th...
Background and Aim: The petroleum contamination is one of the inevitable consequences of population increase and energy consumption. In this study, the method of Bioremediation and Bacillus bacteria have been used in order to remove the petroleum contamination. Material and Methods: The samples of soil were collected and the bacteria were isolated and identified. Then, the production of Biosu...
An effective supramolecular strategy for self-sorting between naphthalene-diimide (NDI) acceptor and dialkoxy-naphthalene (DAN) donor organogelators is reported. The concept is based on mismatch in the placement of the two amide functionalities in the donor and acceptor chromophores so that self-sorting ensured maximum effect of H-bonding.
Enhanced luminescence of europium-doped layered double hydroxides intercalated by sensitiser anions.
Four sensitising anions naphthalene-1,5-disulfonate (15-NDS), naphthalene-2,6-dicarboxylate (26-NDC), benzoate (BA) and terephthalate (TA) were intercalated into a Eu(3+)-doped Zn/Al layered double hydroxide. The carboxylate anions enhanced the red luminescence of Eu(3+) much more strongly than the sulfonate, in the descending order TA > 26-NDC > BA > 15-NDS.
The capacity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-utilizing bacteria to produce biosurfactants was investigated. Twenty-three bacteria isolated from a soil contaminated with petroleum wastes were able to form clearing zones on mineral salt agar plates sprayed with solutions of PAHs. Naphthalene and phenanthrene were utilized as sole substrates. Biosurfactant production was detected by surfa...
Selective Clara cell injury produced by many bioactivated lung toxicants is thought to result from high levels of activating enzymes found in differentiated Clara cells. A recent study found an elevated susceptibility to the Clara cell toxicant 4-ipomeanol in neonatal rabbits when Clara cell P450 activity is low. To determine whether differentiating Clara cells in another species (mouse) are mo...
Naphthalene and benzene are widely-used volatile organic compounds. The aim of this research was to examine the toxicological effects of naphthalene and benzene against Tribolium castaneum as an animal model. Adult insects were exposed to these aromatic compounds to assess mortality after 4-48 h of exposure. The lethal concentration 50 (LC50) for naphthalene, naphthalin, and benzene were 63.6 µ...
The potential health risk from exposure to chemically contaminated soil can be assessed from bioavailability studies. The aims of this research were: (a) to determine the dermal bioavailability of contaminants in soil for representatives of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon class of chemicals, namely, benzo(a)pyrene and naphthalene, and (b) to examine the relative contribution of soil matrix ...
We have found that the specific capacity of a Li-intercalated metal-organic framework (iMOF) electrode material, 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylate dilithium, can be increased by narrowing the distance between naphthalene layers via ordering. The increase in specific capacity can be attributed to formation of more efficient electron and ion pathways in the framework.
