Filamentous structures designated Triton shells were obtained from virulent Mycoplasma pneumoniae by treatment with Triton X-100. Monoclonal antibodies directed against M. pneumoniae were used in conjunction with radioimmunoprecipitation and Western blotting to detect immunologically reactive polypeptides in Triton shells. The major adhesin, protein P1, was associated with these structures.

Epidemics of Mycoplasma pneumoniae have recently been reported from England and Wales and from Denmark. A similar increase in M. pneumoniae infections was noted in Norway late autumn 2011.The epidemic has resulted in shortage of erythromycin and the use of alternative antibiotics has been recommended.

Detection of Mycoplasma pneumoniae by real-time PCR is not yet standardized across laboratories. We have implemented a standardization protocol to compare the performance of thirteen commercial and in-house approaches. Despite differences on threshold values of samples, all assays were able to detect at least 20M. pneumoniae genomes per reaction.

We describe 2 cases of pneumonia caused by the same macrolide-resistant Mycoplasma pneumoniae in siblings. M. pneumoniae was identified using real-time PCR. Direct sequence analysis of the 23S rRNA gene revealed a point mutation in V domain (A2063G) of the 23S rRNA gene.

A 35-year-old man was admitted with fever (38oC), mucous sputum, bilateral conjunctivitis, painful oral ulcerations and mild discomfort while urinating. He had previously received a three-day course of azithromycin for suspected respiratory infection, without improvement. Physical examination showed bilateral conjunctivitis with severe subconjunctival hemorrhage (Figure 1) and markedly swollen,...

Pneumonia is one of the most frequent complications in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome-patients with Pneumocystis carinii as the leading cause. The true prevalence of atypical agents such as Chlamydia pneumoniae, C. trachomatis, Legionella pneumophila and Mycoplasma pneumoniae in this population of patients is unknown as the currently used method for diagnosing these agents is measurement of...

Growth of Mycoplasma pneumoniae was completely prevented by 0.06 mug of actinomycin D/ml, and 0.00375 mug/ml caused 90% inhibition. It thus appears that M. pneumoniae is more susceptible to actinomycin D than previously reported. Low concentrations (0.019 mug/ml) of the antibiotic primarily inhibited ribonucleic acid synthesis and high concentrations (20 mug/ml) inhibited both ribonucleic and d...
