Aims/hypothesis. Two US randomized trials found a lower incidence of type 2 diabetes among women treated by menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) with oral conjugated equine estrogen combined with medroxyprogesterone acetate. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of various MHTs, according to their formulation and route of administration, on new-onset diabetes in a cohort of postme...

first case of secondary-ebola virus disease (EVD) outside Africa was diagnosed in Spain, triggering a health emergency leading to overreaction and unjustified fear among the population and causing a profound moral distress among health-care workers. The high mortality rate of the disease, its contagiousness, and the strict bio-security measures needed causes this emergency to produce specific s...

BACKGROUND Epidemiological studies have suggested that female hormones might play a role in asthma and that menopausal hormone therapy (MHT or hormone replacement therapy (HRT)) might increase the risk of asthma in postmenopausal women. The only prospective study addressing this issue reports an increase in the risk of developing asthma which was similar for oestrogen alone and oestrogen/proges...

Enterobacteriaceae clinical strains that produce the class A carbapenem-hydrolysing enzyme KPC (Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase) are increasingly reported worldwide, and are already endemic in North and South America, China, Israel and Greece. The accurate detection of KPC enzymes is of utmost importance for containing the global spread of KPC producers. Currently, the detection of putative...

Passive Bistatic Radar (PBR), also known as Passive Coherent Location (PCL), uses illuminators of opportunity. Passive radar using signals in a single frequency network modulated according to the Digital Audio/Video Broadcasting (DAB/DVB) standards using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has recently been of increasing interest. There has been considerable research to develop tr...

Ultrathin 2D Co3O4 and Co3V2O8 nanosheets have been produced from our modified hydrothermal technique (MHT). Both the materials have been proved to be extraordinary electrode materials for pseudocapacitors. The neat nanosheets of Co3O4 and Co3V2O8 exhibit a record specific capacitance value of 1256 F g(-1) and 4194 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1) current density, respectively.

OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of carbapenemases in a Klebsiella pneumoniae collection and the performance of the modified Hodge test (MHT) to correctly identify this phenotype. METHODS Twenty-eight K. pneumoniae clinical isolates with reduced susceptibility to carbapenems were evaluated. Antimicrobial susceptibility and molecular typing were performed by agar d...

OBJECTIVES We sought to investigate the prognosis in subjects with "white-coat" hypertension (WCHT) and "masked" hypertension (MHT), in which blood pressure (BP) is lower in clinical measurements than during ambulatory monitoring. BACKGROUND The prognostic significance of WCHT remains controversial, and little is known about MHT. METHODS We obtained 24-h ambulatory BP and "casual" BP (i.e.,...
