By combining x-ray excited Auger electron diffraction experiments and multiple scattering calculations we reveal a layer-resolved shift for the Mg KL23L23 Auger transition in MgO ultrathin films (4-6 Å) on Ag(001). This resolution is exploited to demonstrate the possibility of controlling Mg atom incorporation at the MgO/Ag(001) interface by exposing the MgO films to a Mg flux. A substantial re...

Atomically uniform nucleation products of ligated metal nanoclusters are observed irrespective of reduction conditions for metal-bidentate ligand systems. Monodentate ligands are not reported to wield similar control, indicating steric contributions of complexing ligands may be as important as their electronic structure for synthesizing small nanoclusters.

Chiral mixed ligand silver nanoclusters were synthesized in the presence of a chiral and an achiral ligand. While the chiral ligand led mostly to the formation of nanoparticles, the presence of the achiral ligand drastically increased the yield of nanoclusters with enhanced chiral properties.

A facile boiling water synthesis protocol has been developed to synthesize thiolated Ag nanoclusters with a core-shell Ag(0)@Ag(i)-thiolate structure, which was formed through condensation of Ag(i)-thiolate complexes on the surface of an in situ formed Ag(0) core. The as-synthesized thiolated Ag nanoclusters feature strong luminescence via aggregation-induced-emission (AIE).

The stabilization effect of Au towards Pd changed the reactivity of Pd in Au/Pd bimetallic nanoclusters, altering the reaction mechanism from homogeneous to heterogeneous in dechlorination reaction of aryl chlorides. This phenomenon was illustrated by the observed enhancement of the rate of reaction by in situ generated Au-rich bimetallic Au/Pd nanoclusters.

A peptide was designed to generate a sub-nanometric template that guides the growth of fluorescent gold nanoclusters. The peptide was endorsed with nucleating moieties and a three-dimensional structure that arrests the growth of ultrasmall nanoparticles. The nanoclusters are not cytotoxic and can be found in the cytosol of cells.

More and more studies have suggested that methylglyoxal (MGO) induced by type-2 diabetes is related to Parkinson's disease (PD). However, little is known about the molecular mechanism. In this study, we explored the MGO toxicity in neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells. Neurotoxicity of MGO was measured by mitochondrial membrane potential, malondialdehyde, and methylthiazoletetrazolium assays. The levels...

The exploration of electric field controlled magnetism has come under scrutiny for its intriguing magnetoelectric phenomenon as well as technological advances in spintronics. Herein, the tremendous effect of an epitaxial strain on voltage-controlled perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (VPMA) is demonstrated in a transition-metal|ferromagnet|MgO (TM|FM|MgO) heterostructure from first-principles el...

TiN thin films were deposited on MgO (100) substrates at different substrate temperatures using rf sputtering with Ar/N2 ratio of about 10. At 700°C, the growth rate of TiN was approximately 0.05 μm/h. The structural and electrical properties of TiN thin films were characterized with x-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electro...

Magnesium in the body regulates nucleic acid chemistry, mediates cell-cell and cellextracellular matrix (ECM) interactions via integrin activation, and directly influences mineral formation and resorption in bone. Importantly, magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles also exhibit powerful antibacterial properties. Here, MgO nanoparticles were dispersed within poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) composites and...
