Membrane filtration is widely used for sterile filtration, flowthrough immuno-filtration, virus removal, and microbiological analysis.1,2,3,4,5,6 Prior work has described membranes that retain one protein over others.7,8 The purpose of this work is to capture a target species of living cells from a mixed population of microorganisms being concentrated in the retentate of solution being pushed t...

In view of the differences that have been found between the most-probable-number and membrane filtration methods for the recovery of coliforms from chlorinated samples, the survival of total and fecal coliforms in UV-irradiated effluent samples, as tested by the most-probable-number and standard single-step membrane filtration methods, was compared. There were no significant differences in the ...

The use of latex agglutination (LA) tests for bacterial antigen detection in urine specimens is hindered by troublesome reactions such as nonspecific agglutination. Therefore, procedures such as boiling or membrane filtration of urine specimens are often used before LA testing. We discovered that the composition of the membrane filter used in filtration has a marked effect on the performance of...

In order to improve the traditional methods of procyanidins extracting, ultrasonic-assisted filtration was used in the process of extracting proan-thocyanidin which was from membrane concentration of grape seed. Through the mechanism analysis of ultrasonic-assisted ultrafiltration, ultrasonic is able to alleviate the phenomenon of concentration polari-zation, so the efficiency of extracting pro...

Virus filtration is a downstream unit operation in the manufacturing of biotherapeutics to remove potential viral contaminations based on size exclusion. While even very small viruses are effectively retained under normal flow conditions, process interruptions can compromise virus-reduction capacity filter. Yet, direct insights into underlying flow-dependent retention and breakthrough mechanism...

The field of membrane filtration is currently enjoying a great deal of interest and its field of application is expanding rapidly. Since membrane separations are possible at moderate process conditions the application of membrane filtration in food industry and biotechnology is growing very fast [ 11. Furthermore, the possibility to perform separations at low energy costs makes membrane filtrat...

In this work, the polyacrylonitrile monolayer/composite nanofibrous membranes were successfully fabricated at different processing parameters. As expected, compared with monolayer membranes, composite membrane revealed high breaking strength, elongation, porosity, and good filtration performance. The method used in article also provides new ideas for designing filter materials.

Here, we report a first study of virus removal by a novel membrane filtration system, named the “Pore Diffusion”. The “Pore Diffusion” manipulated the direction of circulating flow from vertical to parallel to the membrane, thereby achieved to alter the transmembrane pressure as low as possible. We compared the viral activity between before and after filtration by both infectivity assay and rea...

Antimalarial activities of chloroquine, mefloquine, amodiaquine, and quinine in vitro against Plasmodium falciparum were diminished as a consequence of membrane filtration. Filtered drug solutions gave ID(50) values up to 25-fold greater than those of non-filtered (ethanol-sterilized) drug solutions. Loss of activity by filtration was overcome by increasing the drug concentration prior to filtr...

A three-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics model, coupled with sludge rheology models to account for the behaviour of mixed liquor and porous media models to represent the resistance of membranes to the fluid field, was developed and used in estimating shear stress in the filtration zone of membrane bioreactors. The influence of a suite of factors on shear stress including aerator positio...
