This case report demonstrates the benefit of using the shortened dental arch (SDA) design for a comprehensive implant-supported restoration and the avoidance of the complexities of implant placement near the maxillary sinus. The SDA concept as a treatment option is encouraging in terms of function, patient satisfaction, and cost-effectiveness.

Articulated jaws are highly conserved structures characteristic of gnathostome evolution. Epithelial-mesenchymal interactions within the first pharyngeal arch (PA1) instruct cephalic neural crest cells (CNCCs) to form the different skeletal elements of the jaws. The endothelin-1 (Edn1)/endothelin receptor type-A (Ednra)-->Dlx5/6-->Hand2 signaling pathway is necessary for lower jaw formation. He...

PURPOSE In the present paper the use of tapered-screw bone expanders (TSBEs) is proposed, in combination with the placement of tilted implants, in close proximity to the anterior sinus wall, solving the problem of the reduced height of the alveolar bone in the sub-antral area. The Authors present a case series of full-arch rehabilitations performed with this procedure named: Tilted Implant Expa...

BACKGROUND Pulp stones are discrete calcified bodies found in the dental pulp. The aims of this study were to calculate the prevalence of pulp stones in young Australian adults using radiographs, and to report any associations between occurrence of pulp stones and sex, tooth type, dental arch, side and dental status. METHODS From 217 undergraduate dental students, comprising 123 males and 94 ...

Two female patients, aged 14 years 5 months and 17 years 3 months with skeletal Class III open bite and temporomandibular dysfunction are presented. They had previously been classified as orthognathic surgical cases, involving first premolar removal. The primary treatment objective was to eliminate those skeletal and neuromuscular factors that were dominant in establishing their malocclusions. ...

OBJECTIVE To analyze the long-term changes in maxillary arch widths and buccal corridor ratios in orthodontic patients treated with and without premolar extractions. METHODS The study included 53 patients who were divided into the extraction (n = 28) and nonextraction (n = 25) groups. These patients had complete orthodontic records from the pretreatment (T1), posttreatment (T2), and postreten...

In the past, relationships in the sagittal plane have dominated orthodontic thinking to such an extent that the great majority of clinicians did not even bother to procure frontal radiographs (images, headplates). However, several factors have awakened the current clinician to a deeper interest in the transverse dimension1: (1) maxillary palatal dysjunction expansion (rapid palatal expansion [R...

Naturally occurring axially directed closing and chewing forces were measured in ten patients with mandibular fixture-supported cross-arch prostheses occluding with maxillary complete dentures. The design of the mandibular constructions was characterized by bilateral posterior two-unit cantilevers. The forces were measured using eight miniature strain gauge transducers mounted in the maxillary ...

The objective of this study was to describe a numerical scoring system for the measurement of maxillary arch constriction in patients born with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP). A modification of the Huddart/Bodenham scoring system was compared and contrasted with the current methods of measuring treatment outcome, the GOSLON and 5-year indices. The GOSLON and 5-year indices are represent...
