Cryptococcus gattii infections, especially including those with severe clinical manifestations, may be related to underlying host immunologic factors. We present 2 cases with autoantibodies to granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), a key cytokine in macrophage function. Immunologic evaluation for anti-GM-CSF antibodies may be important to inform management and counseling.

We used the promoter of the human C-reactive protein (CRP) gene to drive inflammation-inducible overexpression of the cytokine granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) in transgenic mice. Transgenic mice carrying a CRP/GM-CSF fusion gene show a >150-fold increases in circulating levels of GM-CSF within 6 h of intraperitoneal inoculation with 25 microg of lipopolysaccharide. How...

The performance of biomaterials-based therapies can be hindered by complications associated with surgical implant, motivating the development of materials systems that allow minimally invasive introduction into the host. In this study, we created cell-adhesive and degradable gelatin scaffolds that could be injected through a conventional needle while maintaining a predefined geometry and archit...

BACKGROUND Recombinant human granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (rhGM-CSF) is usually administered by injection, and its oral administration in a clinical setting has been not yet reported. Here we demonstrate the bioavailability of orally administered rhGM-CSF in healthy volunteers. The rhGM-CSF was expressed in Bombyx mori expression system (BmrhGM-CSF). METHODS AND FINDINGS U...

Granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor (GMCSF), a multifunctional cytokine can enhance immune responses when administered along with DNA vaccine. Aim of the present study was to clone and express the chicken GMCSF cytokine for use as 'genetic adjuvant'. Chicken GMCSF gene 435bp was amplified using specific primers in which restriction sites of BamHI and HindIII were at forward and rev...

Chronic inflammation is thought to be a major driving force for the development of colitis-associated colorectal cancer (CAC). As one member of proinflammatory cytokine family, granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) has been identified to play a key role in CAC pathogenesis recently. The underlying mechanisms, however, remain largely unknown. In this study, we found that myel...

125I-labeled recombinant human interleukin 3 (IL-3) bound, at 4 degrees C, to a single class of high-affinity receptors on human eosinophils with an apparent dissociation constant (Kd) of 470 pM, but it did not bind to human neutrophils. 125I-labeled recombinant human granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) also bound to a single class of high-affinity receptors on eosinophils...

Cytokines released by immune system cells play an important role in cyst enlargement. This study aimed to determine, by ELISA, the levels of granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), interleukin 3 (IL-3), and IL-6 in fluid and tissue from human radicular cysts. GM-CSF was found in 42.8% of the fluid samples (164.3 pg/mL) and IL-6 in 92.8% (641.4 pg/mL). No IL-3 was detected in ...

Secretion of several cytokines by colorectal carcinoma cells has been substantiated. These do not include granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) thus far. We show that the supernatant of two human colorectal carcinoma cell lines, LS1034 and SW480, stimulates proliferation of GM-CSF-dependent M07e cells. The activity was constitutively secreted by LS1034 cells and could be ind...

Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) is a cytokine that is able to increase not only the production of phagocytic cells but also their efficacy with respect to, e.g., bactericidal properties. In this study, we wanted to analyze the impact of GM-CSF on experimental Staphylococcus aureus-induced arthritis. For that purpose, mice were administered GM-CSF before and after bacte...
