Intravascular stents, currently in experimental human use for recurrent arterial stenosis, are plagued by subacute thrombosis. As a therapeutic approach to stent-related thrombosis, we and others have suggested coating stents with endothelial cells before implantation. In a previous study we demonstrated the feasibility of coating stents with endothelial cells that were genetically modified to ...

Vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs) have been broadly used for constructing tissue-engineered blood vessels. However, the availability of mature SMCs from donors or patients is very limited. Derivation of SMCs by differentiating embryonic stem cells (ESCs) has been reported, but not widely utilized in vascular tissue engineering due to low induction efficiency and, hence, low SMC purity. To add...

A facile, self-seeded, solution-liquid-solid growth of soluble InP and GaP nanowires with a very low amount of native point defects with respect to the carrier concentrations have been synthesized (see scheme) and characterized. They are potentially promising building blocks in optoelectronic applications. We demonstrate a facile method for self-seeded, solution-liquid-solid growth of soluble In...

OBJECTIVE The effect of bilirubin on renal pathophysiology is controversial. This study aimed to observe the effects of bilirubin on the proliferation of normal rat renal tubular epithelial cell line (NRK52E) and its potential interplay with gap junction function. METHODS Cultured NRK52E cells, seeded respectively at high- or low- densities, were treated with varying concentrations of bilirub...

A cell line (B1) was established from the bone marrow of a patient with a relapse of acute leukemia characterized by a 4;11 chromosomal translocation and biphenotypic features of early B and myeloid lineages. Analysis of the growth requirements of this cell line showed density-dependent growth and secretion of an autostimulatory growth factor, suggesting an autocrine mechanism. Several lines of...

BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE STUDY A new-generation heart valve was developed to improve long-term durability. The study aim was to evaluate the need for in-vitro autologous endothelial cell seeding of a decellularized valve scaffold. METHODS A seeded (group I, n = 6) or non-seeded (group II, n=6) decellularized valve was implanted into the right ventricular outflow tract of 12 juvenile sheep. I...

Primary chondrocytes from whole chick embryo sterna can be maintained in suspension culture stabilized with agarose for extended periods of time. In the absence of FBS, the cells remain viable only when seeded at high densities. They do not proliferate at a high rate but they deposit extracellular matrix with fibrils resembling those of authentic embryonic cartilage in their appearance and coll...

In condition monitoring of low speed rolling element bearings (REBs), traditional techniques involving vibration acceleration may not be able to detect a growing fault due to the low impact energy generated by the relative motion of the components. This study presents an experimental evaluation for incipient fault detection of low speed REBs by using an acoustic emission (AE) sensor and an acce...

The GeneOhm MRSA assay detects nasal colonization with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). We compared the use of seeded swabs with liquid Stuart's medium and that of seeded swabs with Amies gel for the assay. Overall, the swabs with liquid Stuart's medium detected significantly greater numbers of MRSA than the swabs with Amies gel (P = 0.0003).
