We report a high-resolution resonant inelastic soft x-ray scattering study of the quantum magnetic spin-chain materials Li(2)CuO(2) and CuGeO(3). By tuning the incoming photon energy to the oxygen K edge, a strong excitation around 3.5 eV energy loss is clearly resolved for both materials. Comparing the experimental data to many-body calculations, we identify this excitation as a Zhang-Rice sin...

Creation of plasmons in water by energetic particles in biological tissue is important because this form of energy can migrate from the place of excitation and be transferred to nearby molecules like DNA. We have searched for evidence of plasmons in solid water, using electron-energy-loss and secondary electron spectroscopies excited by 70–1000-eV electrons. We find that the energy of the main ...

The skipping motion of Ne+ ions in grazing scattering from the LiF(001) surface is studied for velocity below 0.1 a.u. with a time-of-flight technique. It is demonstrated that suppression of electronic excitation and dominance of optical phonon excitation in the projectile stopping results in an odd 1,3,5,... progression of the energy loss peaks, a feature usually ascribed to subsurface channel...

The nature of the repulsive Coulomb barrier in isolated molecular polyanions is studied by means of the photodetachment dynamics of the S(1) excited state of the fluorescein dianion which is bound solely by the repulsive Coulomb barrier. Photoelectron spectra reveal a feature at a constant electron kinetic energy, regardless of the excitation energy. This is explained by using an adiabatic tunn...

We investigate the influence of low-energy recoils with respect to the electronic excitation of solids generated in atomic collision cascades. It is found that the electronic friction experienced by recoil atoms moving with kinetic energies below 10 eV contributes substantially to the total excitation energy dissipated into electronic degrees of freedom. The collision dynamics, on the other han...

Picosecond time-resolved infrared spectroscopy was used to elucidate early photochemical processes in the diazido complexes M(Cp*)(N3)2(PPh3), M = Rh (), Ir (), using 266 nm and 400 nm excitation in THF, CH2Cl2, MeCN and toluene solutions. The time-resolved data have been interpreted with the aid of DFT calculations on vibrational spectra of the singlet ground states and triplet excited states ...

Differential and integral cross section measurements, for incident electron energies in the 20-50 eV range, are reported for excitation of several composite vibrational modes in α-tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol (THFA). Optimisation and frequency calculations, using GAUSSIAN 09 at the B3LYP/aug-cc-pVDZ level, were also undertaken for the two most abundant conformers of THFA, with results being repor...

We discuss wakefield excitation and propagation in dielectric structures, particularly concentrating on the case of multiple drive beam excitation in multimoded structures. We emphasize calculations of the energy loss of the drive beam train, the amplitude of the wakefield, and the relationship between power flow and stored energy in the dielectric wakefield device. We show that for a collinear...
