By computing spin-polarized electronic transport across a finite zigzag graphene ribbon bridging two metallic graphene electrodes, we demonstrate, as a proof of principle, that devices featuring 100% magnetoresistance can be built entirely out of carbon. In the ground state a short zigzag ribbon is an antiferromagnetic insulator which, when connecting two metallic electrodes, acts as a tunnel b...

EVALUATiON OF A new drug includes analysis of its tissue distribution. We have developed an improved method for solubilizing tissues that is not only rapid, but results in a homogeneous sample for counting. We had found that organs rich in connective tissue (heart, lung, skeletal muscle, urinary bladder, stomach, and intestinal wall) could not be completely disrupted by conventional techniques ...

The potential of GENIUS as a dark matter detector is discussed. A study was performed to demonstrate the good behaviour of the proposed detector design of naked HPGe-crystals in liquid nitrogen. The expected background components were simulated and are discussed in some detail. With the obtained background GENIUS could cover a large part of the favoured MSSM parameter-space.

Microbes in nature are rarely amenable to growth by standard microbiological methods, with the majority being unculturable. Metagenomic methods help to bypass and overcome the limitations of traditional culturing method; wherein total community DNA is isolated, cloned into suitable vector and host systems. However, isolation of total community DNA itself remains a challenge. In this study five ...

Based on magnetization, specific heat, magnetostriction and neutron-diffraction studies on single-crystal TbCo(2)B(2)C, it is found out that the paramagnetic properties, down to liquid nitrogen temperatures, are well described by a Curie-Weiss behavior of the Tb(3+) moments. Furthermore, below T(c) = 6.3 K, the Tb sublattice undergoes a ferromagnetic (FM) phase transition with the easy axis bei...

We investigate the spin-orbit opened energy gap and the band topology in recently synthesized silicene as well as two-dimensional low-buckled honeycomb structures of germanium using first-principles calculations. We demonstrate that silicene with topologically nontrivial electronic structures can realize the quantum spin Hall effect (QSHE) by exploiting adiabatic continuity and the direct calcu...

A large number of AgI-based fast-ion-conducting glasses have been investigated by K-iodine extended x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS) measurements at liquid nitrogen temperature. A general correlation between the I-Ag distance measured by EXAFS and the glass activation energy for dc ionic conductivity has been found out: glasses with longer I-Ag distances display higher ionic...

A centrifugal method for ultrarapid freezing of cells and subcellular particles has been developed, in which small droplets are centrifuged at high speed through liquid nitrogen. When material such as water or blood was injected from a sYI·inge into a rotor, increased rotor speeds gave progressively smaller frozen droplets. Droplet size of materials introduced from a sprayer was uniform, smalle...

We measure the deceleration of liquid nitrogen drops floating at the surface of a liquid bath. On water, the friction force is found to be about 10 to 100 times larger than on a solid substrate, which is shown to arise from wave resistance. We investigate the influence of the bath viscosity and show that the dissipation decreases as the viscosity is increased, owing to wave damping. The measure...
