When the nursing collection at the University of Illinois Library of the Health Sciences was evaluated in 1990 for an accreditation self-study for the National League for Nursing, the evaluation was broadened to study resources, faculty participation in selecting them, and completeness of holdings. To evaluate holdings, lists were checked and conspectus and comparative statistical data were ana...
The role of libraries in supporting learning is virtually unquestionable. Research indicates that much learning in life is often in informal settings. It is interesting to note that mobile computing affords a great opportunity for supporting such learning. Not only are we living in a "mobile age" or "ubiquitous age", but we are also living in a "digital age". Even as we acknowledge the window o...
The paper describes a prototype that enables library users to use their mobile devices to find the physical location of specific services or objects in a branch of a distributed library. It guides the users to this location using external map services, location-awareness and navigational tools. The architecture of the system is briefly described together with the integrated services.
The creation of large, networked, digital document resources has greatly facilitated information access and dissemination. We suggest that such resources can further enhance how we work with information, namely, that they can provide a substrate that supports collaborative work. We focus on one form of collaboration, annotation, by which we mean any of an open-ended number of creative document ...
At the moment it is not very common to actively work with material stored on an Internet server system. Once the right information resource is found, only passive information consumption of documents is provided by a majority of information systems. While this is appropriate for a kind of reading material, this is a limitation for scientific articles. Scientific articles are often read more tha...
This paper describes the design and development of an effective user interface for a digital library system which manages the different types of information resource produced during the course of a large-scale evaluation campaign. The paper discusses a conceptual model for the interface, presents its architecture, and shows some examples of the actual interface implemented in the prototype syst...
Community memory can provide the crucial bridge between large-scale digital libraries and the day-to-day activities of a community's members. Just as a digital library is based on a general structure and conventional means of access to diverse collections of materials, a community memory culls and shapes the structure of this collection to meet more particular needs; it provides a unique perspe...
Proximity to information resources has repeatedly been shown to affect urban development. However, individuals’ increased abilities to access information content electronically may have dampened urban areas’ comparative advantage of proximity-driven knowledge flows. We investigate the effects of increased high-speed Internet access on the role of information proximity by modeling changes in the...
