An efficient extreme ultraviolet EUV generation method has been developed with the use of a CO2 laser-produced plasma from a grooved target. A 5% conversion efficiency from laser to 13.5 nm photons was obtained with the use of grooves in a tin target or by repeated laser pulse shots at the same target position. Modeling studies proved that the groove target controls the hydrodynamic expansion o...

The Petawatt laser at LLNL has opened a new regime of laser-matter interactions in which the quiver motion of plasma electrons is fully relativistic with energies extending well above the threshold for nuclear processes. In addition to -few MeV ponderomotive electrons produced in ultra-intense laser-solid interactions, we have found a high energy component of electrons extending to -100 MeV app...

Recent works on plasma channels produced during the propagation of ultrashort and intense laser pulses in air demonstrated the guiding of electric discharges along the laser path. However, the short plasma lifetime limits the length of the laser-guided discharge. In this paper, the conductivity and lifetime of long plasma channels produced by ultrashort laser pulses is enhanced efficiently over...

Abstract We present a method to obtain the individual charge-state-dependent kinetic-energy distributions of tin ions emanating from laser-produced plasma their joint overlapping energy measured by means retarding field analyzer (RFA). The extracting charge state specific parameters ion signals is described mathematically, and reinforced with experimental results. absolute charge-state-resolved...

We performed two-dimensional (2D) mapping of the electron density in a laser-produced plasma with high spatial and temporal resolution. The plasma was produced by irradiating an aluminum target with 1064 nm, 6 ns pulses from a Nd:YAG laser under vacuum conditions. Stark broadening of the lines was used to estimate the electron density at various locations inside the plasma. The 2D spectral imag...

The experimental investigation of the energy loss of swift heavy ions in laser produced plasmas [1] is one of the main research activities of the Plasma Physics Department at GSI. Cryogenic systems [2] are in this context of special interest, due to the possibility to create solid state targets (T = 4.2 K ) out of matter which is gaseous under normal conditions, especially hydrogen and deuteriu...

The expansion of a dense (initially, n(lpp)/n(0)>>1) laser-produced plasma into an ambient magnetized plasma ( n(0) = 2 x 10(12) cm(-3)) capable of supporting Alfvén waves has been studied. The interaction results in the production of shear Alfvén waves as well as large density perturbations (Delta n/n(0) approximately 0.3) associated with the moving dense plasma. The waves propagate away from ...

Low-order harmonics, 3rd and 5th, of IR (1064 nm) laser emission have been produced in laser ablation plasmas of the metals manganese, copper and silver. The harmonics were generated in a process triggered by laser ablation followed by frequency upconversion of a fundamental laser beam that propagates parallel to the target surface. These studies were carried out in two temporal regimes by crea...

We describe a four-frame picosecond green laser interferometer developed at the Neptune Laboratory at UCLA. This diagnostic is applied for measuring the dynamics of CO2 laser produced plasmas in a He gas jet. An example of results of the modification of the plasma density profile by the radiation pressure of the laser pulse is presented.
