PURPOSE To verify the accuracy of clinical evaluation compared with videofluoroscopic swallowing studies in the detection of isolated laryngeal penetration and laryngeal aspiration in children with suspected dysphagia; to identify clinical signs and symptoms associated with isolated laryngeal penetration and laryngeal aspiration; and to determine the sensitivity and specificity of the clinical ...

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES Laryngeal electromyography, together with clinical evaluation, is a valuable tool in voice disorder management. It assesses the integrity of laryngeal nerves and muscles, contributing to the diagnosis of many diseases, especially laryngeal movement disorders. Our purpose was to describe the experience of the first Spanish series with laryngeal electromyography in eva...

BACKGROUND Paragangliomas arise from paraganglion cells as part of the diffuse neuroendocrine system. These tumors are generally considered benign. They appear rarely in the larynx and most of them are supraglottic. CASE REPORT We present the case of a 45-year-old female patient who presented with a history of hoarseness for two months and difficulties in swallowing for twenty days. Fiberopti...

We studied myosin heavy chain (MyHC) expression and fiber type distribution in laryngeal muscles in the rabbit, cat, and baboon using immunohistochemistry with highly MyHC-specific antibodies. Two types of variation in MyHC expression were found: between muscles of different function within species and within specific muscles between species. Within species, thyroarytenoid (Ta), an adductor, ha...

A nonrecurrent laryngeal nerve variant of the inferior laryngeal nerve is very rarely seen, and surgeons should keep it in mind during thyroid surgery. Preoperative findings, like situs invertus and dysphagia lusoria, may be suggestive of a nonrecurrent laryngeal nerve. However, these findings always have not to be together with nonrecurrent laryngeal nerve, like our case.

We investigated the expression of Src homology 2 domain-containing phosphatase (SHP-2) in laryngeal carcinoma and its clinical significance. Expression of SHP-2 was detected by immunohistochemical staining in normal mucosal tissues and various grades of laryngeal carcinoma. We looked for possible correlations between expression of SHP-2 in laryngeal carcinoma and clinical staging and lymph node...

BACKGROUND To prevent endothelium and nerve lesions, tracheal tube and laryngeal mask cuff pressure is to be maintained at a low level and yet be high enough to secure air sealing. METHOD In a prospective quality-control study, 201 patients undergoing surgery during anaesthesia (without the use of nitrous oxide) were included for determination of the cuff pressure of the tracheal tubes and la...

Physiological-based synthesis using low order lumped-mass models of phonation have been shown to mimic and predict complex physical phenomena observed in normal and pathological speech production, and have received significant attention due to their ability to efficiently perform comprehensive parametric investigations that are cost prohibitive with more advanced computational tools. Even thoug...
