We show that the Landau levels cease to be eigenvalues if we perturb the 2D Schrödinger operator with constant magnetic field, by bounded electric potentials of fixed sign. We also show that, if the perturbation is not of fixed sign, then any Landau level may be an eigenvalue of the perturbed problem. AMS 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification: 35J10, 81Q10, 35P20

We report the experimental observation of Landau quantization of molecular beam epitaxy grown Sb{2}Te{3} thin films by a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope. Different from all the reported systems, the Landau quantization in a Sb{2}Te{3} topological insulator is not sensitive to the intrinsic substitutional defects in the films. As a result, a nearly perfect linear energy dispersion ...

We compute, neglecting possible effects of subleading irrelevant couplings, the localization length exponent in the integer quantum Hall effect, for the case of white noise random potentials. The result obtained is ν = 2 for all Landau levels. Our approach consists in a renormalization group transformation of Landau orbitals, which iterates the generating functional of Green’s functions for the...

We report the direct observation of Landau quantization in Bi2Se3 thin films by using a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope. In particular, we discovered the zeroth Landau level, which is predicted to give rise to the half-quantized Hall effect for the topological surface states. The existence of the discrete Landau levels (LLs) and the suppression of LLs by surface impurities strongl...

We analyze the linear response of a half filled Landau level to long wavelength and low frequency driving forces, using Fermi liquid theory for composite fermions. This response is determined by the composite fermions quasi–particle effective mass, m, and quasi–particle Landau interaction function f(θ − θ). Analyzing infra–red divergences of perturbation theory, we get an exact expression for m...

A theoretical treatment on the effect of a magnetic field on the thermoelectric figure of merit ZT for two-dimensional (2D) materials is presented. The figure of merit is a function of three transport coefficients: the electrical conductivity, the Seebeck coefficient or thermopower, and the total thermal conductivity. The total thermal conductivity consists of contribution from electrons and ph...

In recent experiments, highly anisotropic states are observed in the half-filled third and higher Landau levels[1]. In the half-filled second Landau level the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE)[2] and transition to the highly anisotropic state are observed[3]. Theoretically the anisotropic states are regarded as stripe states[4] or unidirectional charge density wave states which are plausibl...

We demonstrate quantum control and entanglement generation using a Landau-Zener beam splitter formed by coupling two transmon qubits to a superconducting cavity. Single passage through the cavity-mediated qubit-qubit avoided crossing provides a direct test of the Landau-Zener transition formula. Consecutive sweeps result in Landau-Zener-Stückelberg interference patterns, with a visibility that ...

Lattice-based investigations of two fundamental QCD quantities are described, namely the gluon and quark propagators in Landau gauge. We have studied the Landau gauge gluon propagator using a variety of lattices with spacings from a = 0.17 to 0.41 fm to explore finite volume and discretization effects. We also introduce the general method of “tree-level correction” to minimize the effect of lat...

I demonstrate that the wave function for a ν=n+ν[over ˜] quantum Hall state with Landau levels 0,1,…,n-1 filled and a filling fraction ν[over ˜] quantum Hall state with 0<ν[over ˜]≤1 in the nth Landau level can be obtained hierarchically from the ν=n state by introducing quasielectrons which are then projected into the (conjugate of the) ν[over ˜] state. In particular, the ν[over ˜]=1 case prod...
