Background: Iodine-131 (I-131) is an effective treatment for differentiated thyroid carcinomas (DTC) after surgery. Salivary and lacrimal gland dysfunction has been described in patients receiving high doses of 1-131 due to radiation damage to salivary and lacrimal glands. Objective: This prospective study was conducted to determine the short term effect of oral 1-131 therapy administered to th...

PURPOSE To determine whether messenger RNA coding for fibroblast growth factor receptor-1, interleukin-1 receptor, and glucocorticoid receptor messenger RNA are produced in human lacrimal tissue. METHODS Total cellular RNA was isolated from three specimens of normal human lacrimal tissue and complementary DNA was synthesized. The polymerase chain reaction and sequence-specific primers were us...

The current investigation was designed to examine whether androgen administration might suppress autoimmune disease in lacrimal glands of a mouse model (NZB/NZW F1) of Sjögren's syndrome. Autoimmune, female mice were treated with vehicle or varying concentrations of testosterone for 0, 17, 34, or 51 days, and tears, lacrimal glands, as well as submandibular tissue, were collected from killed mi...

Specimens from the Harderian gland, the lacrimal gland and bursa of Fabricius in ducks with chlamydiosis were processed by the classical histological methods and permanent preparations were obtained. On single and serial histological cross-sections from material fixed in non-aqueous fixator, histochemical tests for PAS reactivity, staining with alcian blue at pH 1.0 and 2.5 as well as staining ...

CASE REPORT A 74-year-old male presented with an orbital tumor located in the left lacrimal fossa. Ocular examination showed hypotropia, exophthalmos and palpebral ptosis. DISCUSSION Removal of the tumor was performed by a lateral orbitotomy. The histopathologic study showed a tumor consistent with an adenocarcinoma of the lacrimal gland with apocrine differentiation.

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are benign, spindle-cell tumors of mesenchymal origin that are usually seen in the superior orbital area in adults. We report a rare case of SFT in the lacrimal gland fossa that developed in a young female. A 25-year-old woman had a 6-month history of a progressive painless mass in the left upper eyelid accompanied by proptosis. Computed tomography and magnetic re...

A 60-year-old woman presented with acute eyelid swelling and a subcutaneous hemorrhage in the right eye. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a spherical tumor of the lacrimal gland. The tumor was removed by the Kroenlein method. We diagnosed as a B-cell lymphoma that is unclassifiable, and intermediate between diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and Burkitt lymphoma (BL) (intermediate DLBCL/BL)...

Oxidative damage and inflammation are proposed to be involved in an age-related functional decline of exocrine glands. However, the molecular mechanism of how oxidative stress affects the secretory function of exocrine glands is unclear. We developed a novel mev-1 conditional transgenic mouse model (Tet-mev-1) using a modified tetracycline system (Tet-On/Off system). This mouse model demonstrat...

Oncocytomas of the lacrimal gland are rare tumors. We report the first documented case in Nigeria. This was an interventional case report. A complete ophthalmologic and systemic examination with available pertinent investigations was done, followed by a modified exentheration and histopathologic examination. A 60-year-old Nigerian housewife was evaluated for a slow-growing, right upper lid mass...
