We present a case in which trauma from a broken glass resulted in complete amputation of the upper lid and severe lacerations to the lower lid but with an intact and functioning globe. The avulsed upper lid was repaired as a composite autograft. The possible management of such an unusual case is discussed.
The management of eyelid trauma presents some frustrating challenges to the general ophthalmologist. Because each case is unique, adaptation of general principles is essential for optimal ophthalmic treatment. This review includes the essentials of approaches to the evaluation and treatment of eyelid margin and canalicular lacerations. Specific attention is directed towards avoidance of complic...
A case is described in which a fragment of a fractured incisor was embedded in the tongue. The possible mechanism by which this unusual event occurred is discussed. The need to investigate all soft tissue lacerations occurring in the presence of coronal tooth fractures is emphasized.

We prospectively studied 535 newborn infants who had been monitored during labour with scalp electrodes. Daily examination of scalp changes showed frequent transient mild lacerations, while severe complications were rare: seven (1.3%) had scalp ulceration and one (0.2%) developed scalp abscess.
PURPOSE To prospectively compare the efficacy of 2-octylcyanoacrylate (Dermabond; Ethicon Inc, Somerville, NJ) with standard suture repair in the management of nail bed lacerations. METHODS Forty consecutive patients with acute nail bed lacerations were enrolled in this study. Eighteen patients were randomized to nail bed repair using Dermabond (2-octylcyanoacrylate), and 22 were randomized t...
INTRODUCTION Sedating children can facilitate minor laceration repair by minimizing physical and psychic discomfort. However, some clinicians are reluctant to use sedation, in part because of concern about increased patient charges and fear that the emergency department (ED) stay will be prolonged. The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which sedative use during the repair of ...
Third-degree perineal lacerations in 7 mares were repaired surgically by a one-stage method (Goetz technique). Primary healing occurred in all of them without any complication. The conception rate obtained after surgery was 70.1%. Five horses out of seven got pregnant after surgery and no further injury was seen at subsequent foaling. Three mares have produced several healthy foals without any ...
A17-year-old male presented to the emergency department in a blood-stained school uniform. He looked weak and pale. He was rushed to the major-resuscitation area. He had apparently been stabbed multiple times after school. The weapon was a narrow, 6-inch knife. Primary survey revealed an intact airway and slightly diminished breath sounds over the right lung field. His trachea was midline, and ...
