Observations made by the writer during the summer of 1955 suggested that the density of the bacterial flora which develops when oyster larvae are reared in small glass vessels is inversely correlated with the number of spat settling (Walne,1956). From the nature of the observations it could not be determined whether the bacteria were affecting the development of the larvae or whether the proper...
Being nutritionally rich, short-horned grasshoppers (acridids) can be used to produce high quality feed for livestock industries. For a sustainable supply to the feed manufacturing companies a huge acridid biomass should be obtained at a regular basis. For this purpose acridid farming is going to be essential. But for a successful farming their optimum density per unit space should be obtained....
We developed a method for rearing larvae of Africanized bees under laboratory conditions to determine the amount of diet needed during larval development to obtain a worker bee. We started with larvae 18-24 h old, which were transferred to polyethylene cell cups and fed for five days. We found that the amount of diet needed for successful larval development was: 4, 15, 25, 50, and 70 microl dur...
abstract different responses of silkworm larvae under various rearing climate condition would help to obtain better economic performance of some silkworm varities in specific climate conditions. the effect of 4 rearing climate conditions including 1) standard 2) high temperature and humidity, 3) high temperature and low humidity and 4) temperature fluctuation were investigated on the performanc...
To evaluate the influence of larval rearing water on Aedes aegypti oviposition, four types of water were provided for gravid females. It was observed that more eggs were laid in the mixed larval rearing water (2,837) than in the Aedes albopictus water (690) or control water (938), but that this number was similar to what was seen in the Aedes aegypti water (2,361).
pharaoh cuttlefish (sepia pharaonis) is commercially important and native cephalopods in the persian gulf and oman sea. in 2013, a total of 150 eggs of pharaoh cuttlefish were collected from 20 m depth in about 6 miles south of lengeh port and transferred to the laboratory of mollusks research station in bandar-e lengeh. eggs were incubated in temperature of 27.5±0.5 0c (mean ± sd) and salinity...
The life history of the emesine reduviid Pseudometapterus umbrosus (Blatchley) was studied in southern Illinois from February 1999 to November 2000, and the immature stages were described. The bug also was reared from egg to adult under controlled laboratory conditions. This univoltine species occurred on the rock faces of sandstone bluffs often in association with plants and spider webs. Adult...
The techniques and protocols used to successfully capture, transport and breed Arctic cod Boreogadus saida, as well as to rear their larvae through to adulthood are summarized. Breeding B. saida will increase the opportunity to study this fish species, which is a critical part of the Arctic food web.
A rearing system based on a diet gelled with Water-Lock G-400, a synthetic superabsorbent (poly(2-propenamide-co-2-propenoic acid, sodium salt)) (WL), was compared with the standard rearing system (liquid diet suspended in acetate fibers) for the mass production of screwworms, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel). The WL rearing system yielded 2% heavier pupae, 32% higher egg to pupa survival, an...
