The majority of otherwise healthy subjects with chronic cervical spinal cord injury (SCI) demonstrate airway hyperresponsiveness to aerosolized methacholine or histamine. The present study was performed to determine whether ultrasonically nebulized distilled water (UNDW) induces airway hyperresponsiveness and to further elucidate potential mechanisms in this population. Fifteen subjects with SC...

BACKGROUND Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease treatment guidelines support the preferential use of portable inhalers (PIs) over wet nebulization (WN) respiratory therapy. Hospital- and community-based educational initiatives and a community-based provincial drug program policy change were previously implemented to promote the conversion of WN therapy to PI and spacer device use in...

Consultant paediatricians were questioned about their management of wheezing disorders in infants. Salbutamol was the preferred bronchodilator for recurrent wheeze, whereas ipratropium was preferred in viral bronchiolitis. Doses of both medications varied widely. Both inhaled and oral corticosteroids were considered by most respondents. Practice does not clearly follow guidelines or evidence an...

The efficacy of a single metered dose inhaler containing a combination of fenoterol (100 micrograms/puff) and ipratropium bromide (40 micrograms/puff) has been assessed in 12 asthmatics. We conclude that the bronchodilator effect of 2 puffs of the combination inhaler was significantly greater than that achieved by 2 puffs of salbutamol (100 micrograms/puff).

Thirty seven children with acute asthma were given nebulised ipratropium or placebo 30 minutes after their first dose of salbutamol and eight hourly thereafter. There were no significant differences between the two groups in clinical scores, peak expiratory flow rates, length of stay in hospital, or the need for oral steroids.

BACKGROUND Administrative data is often used to identify patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), yet the validity of this approach is unclear. We sought to develop a predictive model utilizing administrative data to accurately identify patients with COPD. METHODS Sequential logistic regression models were constructed using 9573 patients with postbronchodilator spirometry a...

The long-term use of inhaled anticholinergic agents has recently been suggested to be associated with an excess risk of adverse cardiovascular (CV) outcomes in patients with COPD. We identified 15 published studies that reported on the association between long-term inhaled anticholinergic use and adverse CV outcomes. Only 3 of the studies were adequately designed randomized controlled trials (R...
