Return to the abdominal cavity of an intestinal loop which had suffered from ischemia, may induce, after a free interval, disordered transit or frank intestinal obstruction, sometimes peritonitis. This is always dangerous, especially in elderly patients. The authors report 5 cases which illustrate this danger, in daily surgery, and recall the rules for treatment of strangulated hernia.
Patients with chronic severe diarrhoea after truncal vagotomy and pyloroplasty are often difficult to treat using conventional antidiarrhoeal drugs and remain severely disabled. We examined the effect of two drugs, codeine phosphate and loperamide, on upper intestinal transit and carbohydrate absorption, measured non-invasively by serial exhaled breath hydrogen monitoring, in patients with post...
SMALL bowel transplantation (SBT) has become clinically feasible. The surgical procedure including transection. denervation. and ischemia may alter intestinal motility. A study of motility in the transplanted smail bowel may help increase the understanding of clinical problems. such as diarrhea. which are frequently seen after SBT. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of SBT on...
Objective- In this study, the general anatomical features of the digestive tube and the transit time of the digestive tube of the Zarudni’s spur-thighed tortoises were examined by contrast radiology. Design - Experimental study. Animals - 4 adult female Zarudni’s Spur-thighed Tortoises (Testudo graeca zarudnyi). Procedures- At a temperature of 25-27°c a set of dorsoventral rad...
Dietary fibre is widely recognized to have beneficial effect in-patients with NIDDM. In particular, water-soluble fibre has been associated with improved glycaemic control and lowering of blood lipid (1). These effects are not due to increased insulin secretion but probably due to increased secretion of VIP and GIP, increased cholesterol binding in the gut and increased intestinal transit time ...
In a study of bowel function in normal subjects wheat bran or cellulose was added to the diet for four weeks (16 g/day). Stool weight increased. Intestinal transit time did not significantly alter. Faecal bile acids did not increase but were diluted. It seems that the effect of these materials is to produce a bulky stool and that any symptomatic benefit they produce is secondary to this.
Methods The authors present 7 cases of primary gastric stump cancer surgically treated in our department during the period 1999–2002. The age of patients was between 61 and 79 years. The average time between primary gastric resection and diagnosis of carcinoma of gastric stump was 19 years (6–32 years). All patients considered operable underwent total gastrectomy and restoration of intestinal t...
Maropitant is a neurokinin 1 receptor (NK1R) antagonist that is clinically used as a new anti-emetic drug for dogs. Substance P (SP) and its receptor NK1R are considered to modulate gastrointestinal peristalsis. In addition, SP works as an inflammatory mediator in gastrointestinal diseases. Aim of this study is to clarify the effects of maropitant on intestinal motility and inflammation in mice...
Chloride channels modulate gastrointestinal neuromuscular functions in vitro. Lubiprostone, a selective type 2 chloride channel (ClC-2) activator, induces intestinal secretion and has been shown to relieve constipation in clinical trials; however, the effects of lubiprostone on gastric function and whole gut transit in humans are unclear. Our aim was to compare the effects of the selective ClC-...
