The weighted constraint satisfaction problem (WCSP) occurs in the crux of many real-world applications of operations research, artificial intelligence, bioinformatics, etc. Despite its importance as a combinatorial substrate, many attempts for building an efficient WCSP solver have been largely unsatisfactory. In this paper, we introduce a new method for encoding a (Boolean) WCSP instance as an...
In chemoinformatics, searching for compounds which are structurally diverse and share a biological activity is called scaffold hopping. Scaffold hopping is important since it can be used to obtain alternative structures when the compound under development has unexpected side-effects. Pharmaceutical companies use scaffold hopping when they wish to circumvent prior patents for targets of interest...
The performance of microprocessors has increased steadily over the past 20 years at a rate of about 50% per year. This is the cumulative result of architectural improvements as well as increases in circuit speed. Moreover, this improvement has been obtained in a transparent fashion, that is, without requiring programmers to rethink their algorithms and programs, thereby enabling the tremendous ...
BACKGROUND Isolated limb perfusion (ILP) is an effective limb salvage strategy in patients with advanced soft tissue sarcoma (STS) where surgery alone would result in significant functional morbidity or mandate an amputation. Most previous reports of patients undergoing ILP focus on limb salvage rates rather than local and distant relapse rates. Here, we report the oncological outcome of sarcom...
Interlanguage-links (ILLs) among Wikipedias are one of important multilingual resources. In this paper, we describe analysis results of ILLs in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and English (CJKE) Wikipedias, and propose a cross-lingual keyword navigation system using ILLs. From analysis of ILLs, we found five patterns of ILLs. An overview of analysis results and the system are described.
These days there’s a computational version of everything. Computational biology, computational musicology, computational archaeology, etc, etc. Even movies are going digital. This chapter, as you might have guessed by now, thus explores the computational side of pragmatics. Computational pragmatics might be defined as the computational study of the relation between utterances and context. Like ...
A potentially fruitful area for applied linguistic research is the nature of the linguistic systems used by second language learners as they learn--or even after they appear to have stopped learning. It has been suggested at various times that the findings of this sort of research would be useful not only to language teachers and textbook writers, but also to our understanding of language conta...
This paper presents one of the linguistic resources developed in the scope of the ONOMASTICA European project. In terms of size, the interlanguage pronunciation lexicon represents a very small fraction of the global lexicon produced by the project. The interest of this research tool, however, derives from its particular contents: 1; 000 names from each of the 11 languages represented in the con...
