The application of CMOS processing techniques developed in the microelectronics world to that of silicon photonics has been the catalyst for the rapid proliferation of smaller, higher performance, and more densely integrated photonic devices that are rapidly advancing the field with large-scale implementations of photonic systems. It is only logical that as the silicon photonics library continu...

The European Space Agency’s infrared space interferometer DARWIN is dedicated to the investigation of Earth-like extrasolar planets orbiting bright stars. A multi-aperture interferometer fed by free-flying telescopes allows spectroscopic analysis of the weak planet signal which could give hints on the possibility of the existence of Earth-like life. However, for a Sun/Earth-like constellation a...

As a novel application of silicon-based integrated optics, results from a proposed compact Mach-Zehnder interferometer are presented. The deposition of a ZnO thin-film transducer upon the reference arm of the interferometer transforms this optically passive device into a device with active sinusoidal phase modulation.

Quantum Cryptography over 23km of installed Telecom fiber using a novel interferometer with Faraday mirrors is presented. The interferometer needs no alignment nor polarization control and features 99.8% fringe visibility. A secret key of 20kbit length with a error rate of 1.35% for 0.1 photon per pulse was produced. We describe in detail our caesium atom interferometer which uses a combination of microwaves and momentum-changing adiabatic transfer pulses. This combination allows us to achieve spatial separation between the arms of the interferometer. We account for the observed visibility of the resulting interference fringes and find that the effects which contribute the most are optical pumping and magne...

We report the characteristics of a flux locked, superfluid 4He interferometer that can continuously measure time-varying rotation rates. We describe the principles underlying the interferometer, including the dynamics of a superfluid chemical potential battery used to obtain continuous operation. We also discuss noise and drift issues and their possible amelioration.

We designed and fabricated an all-reflective 50/50 beam splitter based on a dielectric grating. This beam splitter was used to set up a power-recycled Michelson interferometer with a finesse of about FPR ≈ 880. Aspects of the diffractive beam splitter as well as of the interferometer design are discussed.

Atoms can be trapped and guided with electromagnetic fields, using nanofabricated structures. We describe the fundamental features of an interferometer for guided matter waves, built of two combined Y-shaped beam splitters. We find that such a device is expected to exhibit high contrast fringes even in a multimode regime, analogous to a white light interferometer.

The beam splitter and phase shifter, which are the key elements in the experiments of light interference, are realized in the motion of trapped ions. Some applications, such as the creation of quantum motional states and the realization of Mach-Zehnder interferometer, are illustrated. Several detection methods of motional states used in the interferometer are also discussed.

An alignment-sensing scheme for all significant angular degrees of freedom of a power-recycled Michelson interferometer with Fabry-Perot cavities in the arms was tested on a tabletop interferometer. The response to misalignment of all degrees of freedom was measured at each sensor, and good agreement was found between measured and theoretical values.
