We investigate generalized potentials for a mean-field density functional theory of a three-phase contact line. Compared to the symmetrical potential introduced in our previous article [Phys. Rev. E 85, 011120 (2012)], the three minima of these potentials form a small triangle located arbitrarily within the Gibbs triangle, which is more realistic for ternary fluid systems. We multiply linear fu...
This chapter covers selected fundamental topics in Materials Science, with the purpose of introducing certain concepts that will serve as a foundation for other chapters in this volume. The topics addressed include: interfacial Gibbsian thermodynamics, with special emphasis on adsorption (or interfacial segregation) phenomena; statistical thermodynamic treatments of interfacial segregation, wit...
The identification of the interfacial molecules in fluid-fluid equilibrium is a long-standing problem in the area of simulation. We here propose an alternative point of view, making use of concepts taken from the field of computational geometry, where the definition of the "shape" of a set of points is a well-known problem. In particular, we employ the alpha -shape construction which, applied t...
Strain is a novel approach to manipulating functionalities in correlated complex oxides. However, significant epitaxial strain can only be achieved in ultrathin layers. We show that, under direct lattice matching framework, large and uniform vertical strain up to 2% can be achieved to significantly modify the magnetic anisotropy, magnetism, and magnetotransport properties in heteroepitaxial nan...
Organic photovoltaics have the potential to serve as lightweight, low-cost, mechanically flexible solar cells. However, losses in efficiency as laboratory cells are scaled up to the module level have to date impeded large scale deployment. Here, we report that a 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) cathode interfacial treatment significantly enhances performance reproducibility in inverted high...
We present a synthetic adaptation of the fibrillar adhesion surfaces found in nature. The structure consists of protruding fibrils topped by a thin plate and shows an experimentally measured enhancement in adhesion energy of up to a factor of 9 over a flat control. Additionally, this structure solves the robustness problems of previous mimic structures and has preferred contact properties (i.e....
