We propose a generalization of the notion of the absorbent element of aggregation operators. Our construction involves tuples of values that are absorbent, that is, that decide the result of aggregation. We analyze some basic properties of this generalization and determine the absorbent tuples of some popular classes of aggregation operators.
We experimentally test four different information aggregation mechanisms. Each mechanism is tested in a simple ‘two-state’ environment and a complex ‘eight-state’ environment where the number of securities is large (relative to the number of traders) and the Bayesian inference problem is significantly more difficult. We find that the Double Auction market mechanism performs well in the simple e...
Participatory governance entails converting citizens from passive users of administrative decisions into active participants of political procedures. Public institutions and organizations can benefit from methods and tools able to aggregate and interpret information dispersed among citizens. In this paper we explore the use of Information Aggregation Markets (IAMs) for citizen engagement. We id...
This paper investigates the practical usefulness of secure multiparty computation (MPC) techniques in multi-domain network management. We design and implement privacy-preserving protocols for event correlation and aggregation of network traffic statistics, such as addition of volume metrics, computation of feature entropy, and distinct item count. To improve the performance of our protocols, we...
In the future, we are likely to see a tremendous rise in mobile computing and communications as ubiquitous applications incorporate multimedia information. These mobile multimedia applications will have QoS requirements; resource provisioning algorithms utilize current system resource availability information to ensure that these applications meet their QoS requirements. Information collection ...
The current state of the RFC 3550 RTP/RTCP standard is not optimal for large-scale streaming sessions employing sourcespecific multicast and is currently the subject of research in many research laboratories. The most promising optimization for the RTP/RTCP protocol seems to be hierarchical aggregation [2], [3], [5], [6], [10], [11]. However, hierarchical aggregation has not yet completely solv...
This paper summarizes some results of the authors’ research that have been carried out in recent years on generalization of conventional aggregation operators. Aggregation of information represented by membership functions is a central matter in intelligent systems where fuzzy rule base and reasoning mechanism are applied. Typical examples of such systems consist of, but not limited to, fuzzy c...
Market prices are thought to contain a lot of useful information. Hence, regulators (and other agents) are often urged to use market prices to guide decisions. An important issue to consider is the endogeneity of market prices and how they are affected by the prospect of government intervention. We show that if the government learns from the price when taking a corrective action, it might reduc...
The concept of Digital Cities incorporates the need for communicating geographic information. Chorematic diagrams are a special method for communicating geographic information, especially for commucating highly synthesized and aggregated concepts, that used to enjoy great popularity. This report on a dissertation in progress describes an analytical approach towards automatization of chorematic ...
