In 29 children with mental retardation and infantile spasms, cranial computed tomography findings were abnormal in 75% and this finding may lead to modification of treatment or influence genetic counseling. In 41 children with mental retardation and other forms of epilepsy abnormal computed tomography findings were much less frequent and were not relevant to treatment.

This article reviews the ictal and interictal EEG findings associated with a select group of generalized seizures. These include absence seizures, myoclonic seizures seen in juvenile myoclonic epilepsy, idiopathic generalized tonic clonic seizures, infantile spasms, and atypical absence, tonic, and atonic seizures associated with the Lennox Gastaut syndrome.

Patients presenting with infantile spasms, dysmorphic features, and periventricular nodular heterotopia may benefit from genetic copy number variation microarray, or whole-exome sequencing to identify candidate genes. This will allow personalized diagnosis and prognostication and the eventual understanding of single and combined gene functions in brain health and disease.
