In Sepioteuthis lessoniana, the oval squid, ontogenetic changes in the kinematics of the mantle during escape-jet locomotion imply a decline in the relative mass flux of the escape jet and may affect the peak weight-specific thrust of the escape jet. To examine the relationship between ontogenetic changes in the kinematics of the mantle and the thrust generated during the escape jet, we simulta...

A small-scale squid hand-jig fishery targeting the squids Loligo vulgaris and Loligo forbesi exists in the northwestern Iberian Peninsula. Its importance is evaluated using a model based on a short survey of fishery statistics. A total of 46 ports in Galicia operate this fishery. These ports were classified into three categories, according to characteristics relevant to the length of season in ...

Pelagic ecosystems are dynamic ocean regions whose immense natural capital is affected by climate change, pollution, and commercial fisheries. Trophic level-based indicators derived from fishery catch data may reveal the food web status of these systems, but the utility of these metrics has been debated because of targeting bias in fisheries catch. We analyze a unique, fishery-independent data ...

The mission of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is to understand and predict changes in the Earth=s environment and to conserve and manage coastal and oceanic marine resources and habitats to help meet our Nation=s economic, social, and environmental needs. As a branch of NOAA, the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) conducts or sponsors research and monitoring pr...

We have combined a novel low temperature positioning mechanism with a single-chip miniature superconducting quantum interference device ~SQUID! magnetometer to form an extremely sensitive new magnetic microscope, with a demonstrated spatial resolution of ;10 mm. The design and operation of this scanning SQUID microscope will be described. The absolute calibration of this instrument with an idea...

Directly coupled dc SQUID gradiometers on the basis of YBqCu,O, for unshielded NDE measurements are investigated. The influence of different SQUID layout parameters on the field sensitivity is shown. A sensitivity of 500 ffl(crn.JHz) is achieved with a baseline of 3.6 mrn. A slit in an aluminium plate was detected in an demonstration of NDE in 1 cm depth with eddy current method.

We study noise and noise energy of a high-Tc dc SQUID fabricated on a high-ǫR substrate whose conduction properties are given by transmission line physics. We show that transmission line resonances greatly enhance the noise. Remarkably, resistance asymmetry enhances these resonances even more. However, as the transfer function (dc dφ ) scales the same way, the noise energy is reduced by asymmet...

This paper presents a performance study of the state-of-the-art caching proxy called Squid. We instrumented Squid to measure per request network and disk activities and conducted a series of experiments on large Web caches. We have discovered many interesting and consistent patterns across a wide variety of environments. Our data and analysis are essential for understanding, modeling, benchmark...
