The proportion of US food that is imported is increasing; most seafood and half of fruits are imported. We identified a small but increasing number of foodborne disease outbreaks associated with imported foods, most commonly fish and produce. New outbreak investigation tools and federal regulatory authority are key to maintaining food safety.

conclusions: the presented food-based strategies in this study introduce a precise management for depression benefiting from iranian traditional medicine resources. background: considering the increasing prevalence of depression in contemporary societies, general tendency for safer treatments with fewer side effects has recently been a subject of interest. objectives: food-based strategies, whi...
OBJECTIVES To determine the prevalence and sociodemographic factors related to vegetarians according to different definitions in Finland and to compare the consumption of selected foodstuffs and nutritional intakes among vegetarians and omnivores. DESIGN Information about subjects' identification as vegetarians in a survey was used as a basis for self-defined vegetarianism. Foodstuffs consume...
A new method for the simultaneous determination of lead, cadmium and mercury ions in microwave-digested foodstuffs by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography combined with on-line enrichment technique has been developed. The foodstuff samples were digested by microwave digestion. The lead, cadmium and mercury ions can be precolumn derivatized with 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(3-aminophenyl...
Styrene is efficiently metabolized to styrene oxide, which is itself readily detoxified by the same enzymes as those involved in the metabolism of various foodstuffs. Styrene oxide, like many intermediate metabolites of foodstuffs, is genotoxic and, if introduced directly into the stomachs of rodents in high doses/concentrations, gives rise to cancers of the forestomach. Exposing mice to doses ...
A spectrophotometric method for the determination of formaldehyde in foodstuffs was described by using phloroglucinol as the chromogenic agent. The reaction between formaldehyde and phloroglucinol could occur rapidly at room temperature under mild conditions. The spectrophotometric measurements were conducted at 474nm of an unstable intermediate orange product of the reaction, which greatly inc...
Micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC) has been applied for the determination of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural in several foodstuffs. A 75mM phosphate buffer solution at pH 8.0 containing 100mM sodium dodecylsulphate was used as background electrolyte (BGE), and the separation was performed by applying +25kV in a 50μm I.D. uncoated fused-silica capillary. Good linearity over the range 2.5-250m...
