We investigate the geometry of hyperbolic knots and links whose diagrams have a high amount of twisting of multiple strands. We find information on volume and certain isotopy classes of geodesics for the complements of these links, based only on a diagram. The results are obtained by finding geometric information on generalized augmentations

We describe a new proof of the complete integrability of the two related dynamical systems: the billiard inside the ellipsoid and the geodesic flow on the ellipsoid (in Euclidean, spherical or hyperbolic space). The proof is based on the construction of a metric on the ellipsoid whose nonparameterized geodesics coincide with those of the standard metric. This new metric is induced by the hyperb...

In order to obtain a global principle for modeling closed surfaces of arbitrary genus, first hyperbolic geometry and then discrete groups of motions in planar geometries of constant curvature are studied. The representation of a closed surface as an orbifold leads to a natural parametrization of the surfaces as a subset of one of the classical geometries S, E and H. This well known connection c...

This talk re-examines some of the evolving interaction between hyperbolic geometry and low-dimensional topology, focussing in particular on some contributions of Murray Macbeath to surface topology.

The goal of this paper is to introduce and study analogues of the Euclidean Funk and Hilbert metrics on open convex subsets Ω of hyperbolic or spherical spaces. At least at a formal level, there are striking similarities among the three cases: Euclidean, spherical and hyperbolic. We start by defining non-Euclidean analogues of the Euclidean Funk weak metric and we give three distinct representa...

The ultimate goal of spatial information, both as part of technology and as science, is to answer questions and issues related to space, place, and location. Therefore, geometry is widely used for description, storage, and analysis. Undoubtedly, one of the most essential features of spatial information is geometric features, and one of the most obvious types of analysis is the geometric type an...

Chinburg and Reid have recently constructed examples of hyperbolic 3manifolds in which every closed geodesic is simple. These examples are constructed in a highly non-generic way and it is of interest to understand in the general case the geometry of and structure of the set of closed geodesics in hyperbolic 3-manifolds. For hyperbolic 3-manifolds which contain an immersed totally geodesic surf...

Parallel lines are very important objects in Euclid plane geometry and its behaviors can be gotten by one's intuition. But in a planar map geometry, a kind of the Smarandache geometries, the situation is complex since it may contains elliptic or hyperbolic points. This paper concentrates on the behaviors of parallel bundles in planar map geometries, a generalization of parallel lines in plane g...

The group-invariant geometry on real and complex n-balls is hyperbolic geometry, if one pursues classical geometric notions in this context, in the sense that there are infinitely many straight lines (geodesics) through a given point not on a given straight line, thus contravening the parallel postulate for Euclidean geometry. We will not consider classical geometric notions here, since the tra...
