Fournier's gangrene is a necrotizing, life-threatening fasciitis of the perineal, genital and perianal region which can spread to the abdominal wall, causing soft-tissue necrosis and sepsis. It is usually a polymicrobial infection. The prevalence of the disease is low, but the mortality rate remains high. Several urogenital and anorectal diseases, as well as diabetes mellitus and conditions ass...
The gastric mucosa of the dogfish (Squalus acanthias), as usually prepared for in vitro chambered experiments, shows a secretory rate (JH) of about 2 mueq/cm2-h, but a potential difference (PD) of zero. Raising PCO2 from 0.05 to 0.1 atm increases JH by 40% and causes the development of a PD of about 2 mV, mucosal surface positive. Increasing PO2 from 0.9 to 1.9 atm in a hyperbaric chamber (at c...
PURPOSE To determine the effect of hyperbaric hyperoxia as hepatic preconditioning on hepatocellular integrity in rats submitted to intermittent hepatic ischemia/reperfusion injury. METHODS Twenty male Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups (SHAM, I/R, HBO-I/R and CONTROL). The surgical technique consisted of total clamping of the hepatic pedicle for 15 min, followed by reperfusion for 5 min,...
Exposure to hyperbaric oxygen leads to increased amount of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that are derived from various sources. After the discovery that ROS can function as signaling molecules, the idea of ROS being hazardous to biological tissues has been challenged. The aim of this study was to examine the changes in oxidative stress parameters in diabetics undergoing hyperbaric oxygen therap...
BACKGROUND Inhalation of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) has been reported to decrease arterial oxygen tension (PaO(2)) in the early period after exposure. The current investigation aimed at evaluating whether and to what extent arterial blood gases were affected in mechanically ventilated intensive care patients within 6 h after HBO treatment. METHODS Arterial blood gases were measured in 11 ventila...
The effects of hyperbaric air and oxygen on skin survival were studied in acute 8 X 8 cm neurovascular island flaps in rats. Skin flaps treated with hyperbaric 8% oxygen (equivalent to room air at standard pressure) exhibited no improvement in skin survival. Skin flaps treated with hyperbaric air (21% oxygen) and hyperbaric 100% oxygen exhibited significant increases in survival.
[Purpose] To observe the effect of combined hyperbaric oxygen therapy on patients with post-stroke depression. [Subjects] Ninety patients with post-stroke depression were randomly divided into 3 groups: fluoxetine treatment group (n = 30), hyperbaric oxygen therapy group (n = 30), and hyperbaric oxygen combined treatment group (n = 30). [Methods] Fluoxetine treatment group received anti-depress...
Background & Objective: Outpatient surgery can be performed by general or spinal anesthesia. Spinal anesthetic drugs have side effects. Many anesthesiologists choose general anesthesia, because of its relative predictability and to avoid undesirable side effects associated with spinal anesthesia. For example lidocaine is frequently associated with Transient Neuroligic Symptoms (TNS). Bupivacain...
