A pregnant woman with antiphospholipid syndrome presented with repeated venous thromboembolism (VTE) in the first and second trimesters of pregnancy despite receiving combination therapy with low-molecular-weight heparin and aspirin. The addition of hydroxychloroquine prevented further VTE recurrence, thus demonstrating its potential antithrombotic effects.
The fluid and cellular phases of inflammatory resonse have been measured using a technique employing subcutaneous implantation of polyurethane foam cubes impregnated with heat-killed Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Phenylbutazone, azathioprine, aspirin, cyclophosphamide, and prednisolone suppressed fluid response, whereas sodium aurothiomalate, hydroxychloroquine, and D-penicillamine had no effect....
The authors report on a case of pseudolymphoma cutis in a 48-year-old man. The clinical and histopathological characteristics of this benign skin disorder, especially regarding the differential diagnosis with cutaneous B or T cell lymphomas, are reviewed. Finally, the use of hydroxychloroquine sulfate is suggested for the therapy of pseudolymphoma cutis, especially when the causal factor is unk...
A 79-year-old non-smoker woman was admitted to our hospital following 15 days of unproductive coughing, moderate fever (38°C) and asthenia. She was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis five years before; the dia gnosis was made based on the presence of morning stiffness, symmetric joint pain and swelling in fingers, wrists, elbows, and ankles, and a positivity for both rheumatoid factor (1/160) ...
BACKGROUND Although long-term data are available from biologic studies in North American/European populations with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), long-term findings in Latin American RA populations are limited. OBJECTIVE To examine long-term safety/efficacy of etanercept, methotrexate, and/or other disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) in Latin American patients with moderate-to-severe ...
A 65-year-old female with a history of mixed connective tissue disease and pulmonary fibrosis on azathioprine, hydroxychloroquine, and prednisone (osteoporosis on teriparatide) presented with a 1-month history of hypercalcemia. After discontinuation of teriparatide, the patient's hypercalcemia persisted. Further evaluation revealed primary hepatic lymphoma as the source of her hypercalcemia.
A 56 year old woman with rheumatoid arthritis developed relapsing thrombocytopenia during successive treatments with aurothioglucose, sulphasalazine, and hydroxychloroquine. The presence of IgM or IgG antibodies or immune complexes reactive with autologous platelets could not be shown. Relapsing thrombocytopenia may indicate a genetically determined HLA-DR3 and B8 aberrant immunological respons...
