We report on spectral observations of the night sky in the band around 900 Å where the emission line in the Sciama model of radiatively decaying massive neutrinos would be present. The data were obtained with a high resolution, high sensitivity spectrometer flown on the Spanish MINISAT satellite. The observed emission is far less intense than that expected in the Sciama model. The detection of low energy neutrinos in a large scintillation detector may provide further important information on astrophysical processes as supernova physics, solar physics and elementary particle physics as well as geophysics. In this contribution, a new project for Low Energy Neutrino Astronomy (LENA) consisting of a 50 kt scintillation detector is presented. ∗Corresponding authors. Fax: ...

In the standard model of the elementary particles, the number of neutrino flavor is three. However, there have been indications of existence of 4th neutrino, called sterile neutrino, in some neutrino oscillation related experiments. A number of experiments are planned to test whether such indications are true or not. Among them, experiments which use neutrinos from π, K, μ decay at rest (DAR) a...

Within an exactly solvable model I discuss an influence of the medium dependent finite width of QGP bags on their equation of state. It is shown that inclusion of such a width allows one to naturally resolve two conceptual problems of the QGP statistical description. On the basis of the proposed simple kinetic model for a sequential decay of heavy QGP bags formed in high energy elementary parti...

Some atomic decays of elementary particles with pionium (ππ-dimesoatom) in the final state are considered. Only for K-meson atomic decays are the corresponding branching ratios big enough to make their experimental study realistic. The O(α) order corrections to the lifetime of pionium are also calculated.

We comment on the present status, the concepts and their limitations, and the successes and open problems of the various approaches to a relativistic quantum theory of elementary particles, with a hindsight to questions concerning quantum gravity and string theory.

In this paper we present a left-right symmetric model for elementary particles. The model is based on the group SU(2)L ⊗ SU(2)R ⊗ U(1) with new mirror fermions. A minimal set of Higgs particles is proposed in order to break this symmetry down to U(1)em. The model can accommodate neutrino oscillations and a consistent pattern for charged fermion masses. An important consequence of the model is t...

The recent apparent observation [1, 2] of the Higgs boson [3, 4, 5, 6] has led to much interest in the popular claim that the Higgs boson (or better, the Higgs field) “gives mass” to those elementary particles that have it. Discuss how the de Broglie relations [7] for “matter waves” lead to a wave equation with a term that depends on mass, and that interpretation of this term as due to the inte...

In the Standard Model, it is generally accepted that elementary particles get their masses via the Higgs mechanism, which involves a phase transition from the symmetric phase at higher temperatures (close to the Big Bang) to a phase in which the symmetry has been spontaneously broken. One of the outstanding problems in particle physics is to explain the origin of the observed matter-antimatter ...
