Two common types of planning systems are “domainindependent” and “domain-configurable”. Domainconfigurable planners can perform very well, but require much hand-tuning for peak performance. Domainindependent planners do not require human aid, but do not perform as well on some problems. Hybrid planners attempt to combine the strengths of these two styles while minimizing their weaknesses.
Formative research is used to inform intervention development, but the processes of transmitting results to intervention planners and incorporating information into intervention designs are not well documented. The authors describe how formative research results from the Trial of Activity for Adolescent Girls (TAAG) were transferred to planners to guide intervention development. Methods include...
Recent progress in the applications of propositional planning systems has led to an impressive speed-up of solution time and an increase in tractable problem size. In part, this improvement stems from the use of domain-dependent knowledge in form of state constraints. In this paper we introduce a diierent class of constraints: action constraints. They express domain-dependent knowledge about th...
In the last decade three main ideas have revolutionized the Artificial Intelligence (AI) planning methods: the plan graph search structure, planning as satisfiability and the search guided by a heuristic function calculated from a relaxed plan. In this paper we present a new planner, named HPP (Heuristic Progressive Planner), that has been implemented using several ideas extracted from other he...
PDDL2.1 supports modelling of complex temporal planning domains in which solutions must exploit concurrency. Few existing temporal planners can solve problems that require concurrency and those that do typically pay a performance price to deploy reasoning machinery that is not always required. In this paper we show how to improve the performance of forward-search planners that attempt to solve ...
It is still remarkably difficult for public health officials charged with developing and implementing pandemic influenza preparedness plans at the community level—where care is delivered— to obtain clear, concrete, and consistent guidance on how to construct plans that are both ethical and actionable. As of mid-2007, most of the federal and state pandemic plans filed with the Centers for Diseas...
To date, no one planner has demonstrated clearly superior performance. Although researchers have hypothesized that this should be the case, no one has performed a large study to test its limits. In this research, we tested performance of a set of planners to determine which is best on what types of problems. The study included six planners and over 200 problems. We found that performance, as me...
Process planning poses significant computational requirements due to the variety of alternative processes, their complexity, and their interactions. General-purpose planners are generally not considered a practical approach, and most current research focuses on special-purpose planning systems. Research within the PRODIGY framework aims to provide expressive general-purpose planners together wi...
