The construction of the Interstate Highway System in the United States and its impact on local industries continues to be part of American folklore and popular culture, over 50 years after construction started and over 25 years after it was essentially completed. The plot of Disney/Pixar’s 2005 animated feature "Cars" concerns a town ("Radiator Springs") whose population had severely declined a...

Populations of a moderately thermophilic magnetotactic bacterium were discovered in Great Boiling Springs, Nevada, ranging from 32 to 63 degrees C. Cells were small, Gram-negative, vibrioid to helicoid in morphology, and biomineralized a chain of bullet-shaped magnetite magnetosomes. Phylogenetically, based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing, the organism belongs to the phylum Nitrospirae.

Nematodes are the most abundant type of animal on earth, and live in hot springs, polar ice, soil, fresh and salt water, and as parasites of plants, vertebrates, insects, and other nematodes. This extraordinary ability to adapt, which hints at an underlying genetic plasticity, has long fascinated biologists. The fully sequenced genomes of Caenorhabditis elegans and Caenorhabditis briggsae, and ...

If you want to meet a truly tough fish, buy a ticket to Lake Magadi, Kenya. Here, the Magadi tilapia swim happily in the hot, alkaline waters of the lake, where oxygen levels soar and plummet daily and water chemistry pushes the boundaries of acid– base regulation. Few fish can survive such an extreme aquatic environment and this has attracted comparative physiologists for decades to the town o...

Machine learning clustering algorithms provide excellent methods for conducting metagenomic analysis with efficiency. This study uses two machine learning algorithms, the selforganizing map and the K-means algorithms, to cluster data from an environmental sample collected from a hot springs habitat and to provide a visual analysis of that data. A data processing pipeline is described that uses ...

The aim of this study was the isolation and characterization of thermophilic bacteria from hot springs in Jordan. Ten isolates were characterized by morphological, microscopic, biochemical, molecular, and physiological characteristics. Sequencing of the 16S rDNA of the isolates followed by BLAST search revealed that nine strains could be identified as Bacillus licheniformis and one isolate as T...

Background: Hot springs harbor rich bacterial diversity that could be the source of commercially important enzymes, antibiotics and many more products. Most of the hot springs present in Northeast of India are unexplored and their microbial diversity analysis could be of great interest to facilitate various industrial, agricultural and medicinal applications. The present study is an attempt to ...

The current view of virus diversity in terrestrial hot springs is limited to a few sampling sites. To expand our current understanding of hot spring viral community diversity, this study aimed to investigate the first African hot spring (Brandvlei hot spring; 60 °C, pH 5.7) by means of electron microscopy and sequencing of the virus fraction. Microscopy analysis revealed a mixture of regular- a...
